World Cup 2022 - discussion, predictions, and thoughts

USA find the back of the net again in stoppage time, ruled offside by what must have been millimeters.

I may not be completely unnbiased here considering the 3 (THREE!) goals they deemed offside in the match vs Saudi Arabia, but I think they should change the rule a bit for these cases, add some tolerance or something, otherwise we are going to lose on something beautiful goals like the one USA just scored.

That offside call wasn’t challenged via VAR; I guess I don’t know how that is supposed to work.

USA, however, did have a number of good chances that came up empty. Could easily have 2 or 3 more goals, IMO.

Yes, I’d love to see the offside rule tweaked a bit, to encourage more offense. I don’t know how it would actually be done though.

Tru dat

Yeah, I’m trying to find the replay from behind the net where you can see exactly what happened. Definitely a knee to the jewels.

The announcer said that it was quickly ruled offside by the VAR judge, but I don’t know. It looked clearly onside to me

Lots of people complain about VAR ruling out super-tight offside calls. I love it. Offside is (more or less) an objective rule. If there’s an objective rule, might as well enforce is as close to perfectly as possible. However frustrating “that looked like a great goal, but it was offside by a hair” is, it’s less frustrating than “we lost because their goal was clearly offside on the replay but it wasn’t called”.

Not sure what rule change there could be that wouldn’t just result in the same discussions and debates and frustrations, but adjusted by 3 inches or one shoulder or whatever.

I’d have to see it again, at first glance it looked offside.

Things look pretty good, the USA dominated the first half and now Iran can’t sit back and go for the draw. A second goal would be really nice.

Holland wins Group A, so they would be our next opponent.

Also true.
However if we see the number of goals per match get significantly lower because of goals that were technically offside but were allowed by the human judges but are now detected by the computer ones we may add some tolerance to get the numbers up again.

Pulisic is not on the pitch; he has been removed in favor of a substitute.

An early goal for the US would be quite welcome.

You can’t escape marginal offside calls. Wherever the line is, sometimes players will be just over it.

And they have made offside more attack-friendly over the years. There was the change to “level is onside” some years back, which may not sound like much, but it made a noticeable difference to linesmen’s eagerness to raise the flag. And then there was the major change to the meaning of “interfering with play”, which used to include merely being in an offside position anywhere near the play. Now, it means actually touching the ball (there’s also “interfering with the opponent” i.e. blocking their view, challenging them for the ball, etc.)

Actually we could still win the group in the best case scenario!

Not likely at the moment, as England leads Wales 2-0.

Yeah, when I posted that it was 0-0. Sorry for jinxing Wales.

Second goal was very poor play from Wales

FYI.

Better video here.

Is there any way for Iran to classify other than winning this by a LOT of goals? if they win they’ll have 4 points, but USA would have 4 points also, so it’s up to goal difference and Iran is way down there.

No, if they win they will have 6 points and the US would have 2.
