World Cup 2022 - discussion, predictions, and thoughts

I don’t think so, there’ll be a lot of love for him rather than any great antipathy.

I think overall England edged it on the night but not by enough to influence the scoreline, such is football.

I’m still happy that we are able to go toe-to-toe with the very best. If we continue to play like that and compete like that we’ll get to the pointy end of tournaments. Then who knows what might happen.

I doubt it. I’d be happy for him to continue. he’s consistently got us performing in major tournaments.

Southgate has done fine, I agree - but, and you’re closer to this than I am- does it feel like he’s under a constant barrage of criticism when they don’t win everything?

Nope. We never win anything. Southgate has come far closer than other managers unless you go back to ancient history.

By the way, Jordan Pickford seems to have adopted the Manual Neuer style of screaming like a child on a tantrum after every save he makes. I prefer the calm, cool style of a Buffon or Casillas for GK’s.

Operation Jinx France is now ongoing.

Is this the best set of quarter finals in World Cup history? Each game was thrilling right till the end. In terms of the semi-final lineup a nice mix of traditional powers along with one of the great underdog runs by Morocco.

not really. For the last three major tournaments he has had in charge we’ve…

a) consistently entertained (a novelty in itself)
b) reached a semi final, a final, and then out in the quarters to a world champion team that we went toe-to-toe with.

I think the country is happy to keep doing that in the hope that a trophy may follow. He is certainly getting us closer than other managers have.

¿Velas negras, muñequitos de vudú, maldiciones gitanas a mansalva?

These were great quarterfinals!

Worse, enthusiastically predicting they are going to win the World Cup.
The candles, vudu, and the rest are currently focused in Croatia, including our worst weapon, pictures of Croatias’ president and/or players with our recent ex-president who’s widely considered to be “mufa”.

I will just wish them luck. Don’t know whether it works when you don’t really mean it at all, but I’ll do it.
But Frodo, don’t underestimate the Morrocans!

German TV showed Mbappé’s glee when Kane missed his second penalty kick. Disgusting. I hope he jynx’d himself with that.

Every WC final since 1982 has had both a Bayern player and an Inter Milan player, and because of the semi match-ups that will be automatically true again this year.

My god, the photo of the president… that goes against the Geneva conventions!

You’ll notice that I carefully avoided naming him…

As opposed to hoping he made it?

It’s a matter off style, isn’t it? Mocking the rival is bad manners and jynxes follow. Maybe.

Was he mocking him though? Was he in his face? Couldn’t tell from the clip.

Look, his opponent just missed a potential game-tying PK in a World Cup quarterfinal with just minutes to play. Who wouldn’t be screaming for joy?

I wouldn’t read anything into what his emotions / intentions were based on a short clip ( and slowed down I think) of a facial expression . I am pretty sure you can pick out similar clips of facial expressions from England players when the first went in , I wouldn’t think that reflects on them other then they were happy.
I’d be pretty ecstatic if I was French and I am English
