World of Warcraft General Discussion

Getting my warrior to 400/400 in all her melee weaponry took about 16h of work; there were three weapons she had at 1. The ranged ones can rot, though, what with not having autoshot. I mean, bringing crossbow from 1 to 400 by plinking away at Dr Boom would need something like that wooden bird Homer Simpson used in “the WoW episode”…
The armory lets you see character info, yes, but there’s risks like “dagnabit Pars, I wanted to use your armor for a shopping list and you logged off in PvP gear!” (the armory shows the stuff the char was wearing when last logged off). It can be good to look for upgrades at high levels, but you have to be careful with any tool that does that, as most are very bad at filtering appropriate stats (“no, my hunter doesn’t want mana regen or spirit, stupid filters…”)

Well, you can, but you need to know which character you’re looking for, knowing the name of Mister Rik’s Horde paladin won’t help you find his Alliance paladin. And like I said, if you’re standing next to the character ingame you can just do a normal inspect and it will tell pretty much the same things the armory will.

Hi Quasi - something similar happened to me a while ago, my Pally was boosted through an instance by a guild member who was superb, explained things as we went along and gave me lots of tips. I found out afterwards he is only 12.

Hmm. You know, that’s not a bad point. I’ve never found it that hard to level up my weapon skills, at least to where I can use them effectively while questing and thereby training them up naturally while I work, but then again we’re usually only talking about 100 points at most. I plan to go either Holy/Prot or Holy/Ret when my Pally hits 80, and that most likely means Maces, which is currently at 146/335. If I leave that off until I hit 80, that’s…a lot of grinding to do.

It’s not that bad, really. To do it, buy a low level vendor white version of the weapon you want to skill up, the lower the weapon damage the better, go find a self healing grey mob (the belfs near SwP are great for this) and beat on them until you hit 400. I leveled my unarmed from 150ish to 400 in about 10 minutes or so doing this. To speed things along, use as much Int gear as you have, as Int increases your weapon skill learning rate.

That is an EXCELLENT polearm. My hunter carries one for his “stat stick”, with an enchant on it.

Do you need glyphs? No you don’t. But they are worth getting. They make you a little more powerful, they do not conflict with enchants on your weapons or armor, they do not disapppear when with an item when it is tossed or sold. “Dollar for dollar” they are possibly one of the best deals around. Enchantments are appiled to yoru things. Glyphs are applied to you.

I did that quest on my warlock (Horde) and didn’t want to pay the Auction House prices. So, I went to Darkshire and “farmed” up the pattern on my own. It was tedious. The drop rate sucks. Looking back, it wasn’t really worth it.

I had to help my GF with this, and I concur, it’s really not. The Warlock optional item quests are sadistic, especially when you consider that you’ll outlevel the items eventually (and if you work on quests instead of farming, you’ll outlevel them even faster). Only the minion quests are really worth doing, and AIUI they’re nowhere near as big a pain in the ass as the item quests.

I’ve used “those guys” in the Blasted Lands for the same thing. There are some near the crystal things (part of a quest chain) that just will not die. So I beat on them with a vendor gray weapon. It’s sort of like a melee Doctor Boom

I was skilling up guns last night. Somehow I feel weirder with my nelf hunter having a gun than when my tauren hunter had one.

I think they changed it so Int is no longer a factor when leveling weapon skills. What I know is helpful is any sort of effect that improves weapon speed.

While WoWWiki has been proven in this thread to not be 100% reliable, it does still say that intellect is a factor as of sometime in 2008 (third entry from the bottom). There hasn’t been any contradicting evidence presented yet.

Yeah, I don’t think he was being snotty/elitist. As with here, it’s hard to convey intentions in plain text, and the wording of his question, if spoken, could be taken many different ways depending on which words were stressed, facial expression, body language, etc.

Though I actually shouldn’t have bothered grouping with those guys. I’m pretty sure they extended the invitation because they assumed we were doing the same quest. As it was, they were doing part of the “Battle of Hillsbrad” chain, to go into Dun Garok and kill X number of mobs + the commander of the fortress. I was doing a followup quest in the “Elixir of Agony” chain that called for entering Dun Garok to swipe a keg of Shindigger Stout. So while they helped me by simply reducing the number of mobs I had to kill to get in, I don’t think I was helping them at all with the mobs I killed.

Well, I actually thought about going with Master Rik, but then I thought that it would be better if I kept my BDSM tendencies to myself

I spent some time in Outland with my 80, unarmed and with no attack buffs on, just farming Fel Iron and punching everything I encountered. I got some good Unarmed skillups from spending a long time slugging a lvl 63 elite. Now my unarmed is up to 375 - just 25 points away from “Did Somebody Order a Knuckle Sandwich?”

Oh, and my human pally got a nice surprise in Stormwind. She had somehow managed to never visit the Blue Recluse tavern. Actually, I just hadn’t bothered taking her there, mainly because of that barker who wanders around SW calling out, “Ask me how to get a free drink at The Blue Recluse!”, but you can’t actually talk to the guy. I sort of assumed he was just there for flavor and the Blue Recluse wasn’t actually a real establishment. Also, having never taken an Alliance mage past lvl 10 or so, I just hadn’t had much reason to hang out in the Mage Quarter other than visiting the Tailoring trainer (who is just inside the gate, so didn’t require going deep into the quarter) and arriving in the mage tower when porting in from Shatt or Dal.

Anyway, I somehow happened to spot the place by chance yesterday and thought, “Oh, it is an actual place - well, I’ll sell my vendor crap while I’m here.” So when I moused over the guy standing in front of the bar I discovered he had a couple low-level quests, one of which turned out to be a “thank you” quest for assisting his cousin in Dustwallow Marsh. That would have been about 40 levels ago … The place put on a “feast” for me (food and drink appeared on all the tables, all of which I was able to gather up, though of course it was all stuff that would have been more useful 40 levels ago), and all the tavern employees cheered me. Cute!

The other quest resulted in my being rewarded with a Moist Towelette

And just for shits & giggles I tracked down and bought the tailoring patterns for the full tuxedo (jacket, shirt, and pants), and made six full tuxes. Put one suit in my guild bank for me and my alts to use, mailed one suit to a friend, and put the other four up on the AH. Hope they sell - all the mageweave I had to buy was darned expensive!

Sigh. I wish I could remember everything all at once and put it all in one post.

My 80 pally also took on Ahune last night. That was successful … NOT.

Don’t you hate quests where the questgiver seems to suggest that you will have help from NPCs, but then no such help materializes?

Reminds me of a Ray Stevens song, “The Ballad of the Blue Cyclone”, in which he gets pummeled by a professional wrestler. He decides to get revenge, and brings along a couple of friends to help him. He goes into the bar where the wrestlers hang out and challenges the Blue Cyclone, and it goes like this:

[I said] “You see them two big dudes over there?”
The Cyclone looked and said, “Over where?”
I turned around and, I’m a sonofagun, they’re gone!

All classes can benefit from glyphs. They aren’t necessary (they didn’t even exist until last fall), but they *can *give some pretty big bonuses. Here is a list of all the Warrior glyphs. Good major glyphs for your level would probably be Hamstring, Overpower, Rending, or Resonating Power. Good minor glyphs for your level would probably be Battle, Bloodrage, or Thunder Clap. You should currently be able to use one of each.

Yup! Your Rage bar is instead of a Mana bar. So anything that affects only Mana is useless for you, Intellect is a useless stat, Mana per 5 Seconds (MP5) is a useless stat, etc. Drinks can be sold to vendors; mana potions can be sold on the AH (or to vendors if they’re lower-level and don’t sell well).

When you’re running and someone casts a beneficial spell on you, that’s a temporary kind called a “buff.” The Warrior class even has some buffs that we can apply to ourselves and people in our parties–Battle Shout and Commanding Shout. Glyphs are kind of like buffs, except instead of giving you some kind of stat bonus, they modify your abilities, and instead of being temporary, they’re permanent changes that you apply to yourself.

IIRC, it’s a very good robe for the level, especially if you do the quest as early as possible. The main reason the robes are so expensive is that people know Warlocks need them for the quest–if you have a friend who’s a Tailor, try giving them the mats to make it for you, instead. (P.S., when you mentioned the weapon… you *did *get the off-hand instead of the staff, right?)

What an excellent idea. I’ve been going nuts since they removed all the easy AFK ways to level weapon skills. Even with white weapons I tend to do a lot of damage, though, just because of my normal Strength etc. I guess I’ll have to play around to see how much equipment I can remove so that I can balance not doing too much damage with not taking too much. Too bad I just cleared a bunch of my old Kara/ZA/etc. gear out of the bank. Maybe I’ll pull out the super-sexy ZG Spider-Man set…

They *allegedly *changed it. AFAIK it *does *seem to still make some small difference. (Which, IMO, is complete bullshit–weapons leveling needs to be nerfed to hell, because there is no comparable time-wasting, boring-as-shit, pain-in-the ass activity for casters. They can pick up a new weapon or offhand and use it right away, even if their skill with that weapon class is 1, because it’s just a stat stick for them. And then when they DO level, they get a speed bonus? Lame, lame, lame. Blizz, if you’re listening… LET US LEVEL OFF OF TRAINING DUMMIES ALREADY.)

All my banks rock out the full tux–so stylish! Don’t forget your monocle, cufflinks, and shoes! You may wish to consider a pimp cane or letter opener (I use the letter opener with various floral offhands I’ve gotten from friends over the years). Jewelry is also a consideration, but obviously won’t affect how your character appears to others.

Not really worth it in my opinion, maybe if one could reasonably be expected to complete it at level 31 but the last step requires you to kill level 39 elementals in Arathi Highlands. When I leveled my Warlock I looked at the quest and said ‘Screw this’ and bought some random ‘of Shadow Wrath’ chestpiece from the ah until I could use the Dreamweave Vest.

Or just remove the need to level weapon skill, just make it so it is always maxed out(you know, like it is for druids).

Oh, and Quasi? Only sell the blue potions. The red potions CAN affect you, since they’re Health Potions, which restore your health up to a certain number (depending on the strength of the potion) instantly instead of gradually like eating does. And other colors of potions can also do you good. Make sure to read the tooltip carefully.

Yep, I did SW and IF on different nights – thus the problem. I was too dead after SW + Stockades to drag my butt over to IF by any route. No worries!

After I found a shopping list of quest lewts by class and zone at wow-loot.com the other day, I hauled over from Howling Fjord to Borean Tundra and started questing like crazy. Now I’ve got a nice slew of gear upgrades as opposed to what I was getting in the former zone, including Fury of the Raging Dragon, since I’d been rocking the Legion Blunderbuss for so long due to not finding a better upgrade. The Warsong bow looked nice but was actually a downgrade, which bummed me.

I’m glad I changed zones though – there’s some pretty damn cool stuff both gameplay-wise and lorewise in Borean Tundra for Hordies. I don’t want to spoil it for people who haven’t been yet, since I had no clue what I was walking into and went “Gaa!” a few times. Immense fun.
