I suspect that’s the reason for the Dalaran fountain. I got from ~400 to 450 mostly just fishing up coins from that fountain. It gives you something more interesting to do than just mindlessly pulling one fish after another out of a lake, and you can get four different achievements out of it.
Thanks all for the advice on gem socketing. I was a little confused when reading the WowHead comments on the Spiked Titansteel Helm, because more than one talked about putting a +16 Strength gem in it, but there didn’t seem to be any +STR blue gems (the +STR gems seem to be red). But, SFG, you’re saying I can put a red gem in a blue socket? That’s doesn’t quite compute in my brain …
Absolutely you can. And often should, unless the socket bonus is so great to make it worth your while to use a lesser gem. As an example, this chest has a red and a blue socket. Normally a Survival Hunter would only use the +16 AGI (or +20 AGI now) red gems in both sockets. However, the socket bonus is +12 AP (roughly equivalent to +6 AGI). So using the +8 AGI/+12 STAM purple gem ends up giving roughly the same benefits (it’s made even closer by the Survival talent that converts 30% of STAM into ranged AP).
Anyway, the general rule is to only use your best stat gems in all slots regardless of color unless there is a strong enough socket bonus to overcome the shortfall or you need a particular color to activate a meta gem.
Also, consider using a prismatic gem in a socket with a particularly nice bonus but no good gem of that color for your class/spec (prismatic gems should never be used in prismatic sockets, that’s a waste of their versatility).
As a side note, how did you do this? My DK is lvl 64 and while I’ve been able to get my enchanting up to 320 or so I’m having a very hard time leveling inscription. Did you have an herbalist gather the mats for your? Or just buy them all from the AH? My inscription is still stuck in the mid 100s and while I have a good number of glyphs to make finding ones that sell is pretty tough… is there any way to make money while leveling it or should I just dump the cash into it to get to a reasonable level?
Yeah, my level 80 priest is an alchemist/herbalist, so I just ran around getting herbs and mailing them to the DK. I did use El’s Inscription Guide to guide my skilling up, so that should be a minimum of wasted cash/effort if you follow that.
As for finding stuff that sells, that’s another matter entirely, and I’m definitely not the person to talk to on that topic! I’d be rich if I weren’t addicted to leveling tradeskills.
Got hot little hands on two really nice items with sockets (boots and belt). Boots got +16 HIT. Debating belt socket (blue), thinking Vivid Forest Emerald at this point.
The question is whether it’s worth it to stick an eternal belt buckle on the belt for a third socket, or save it for future upgrades since I’m still researching what gems I want plus the cost/benefit ratio of a BiS gem versus a cheaper one.
Depends on how costly a belt buckle is to you. I have the benefit of my husband who has a blacksmith character that can make me buckles, and two level 80 characters of my own who can mine and smelt most any metal, so the mats are really easy for me to get. For you, maybe not so much, especially if you plan/hope to upgrade that belt soon.
If it’s a hunter I can give some advice. First, no, don’t use the Vivid Forest Emerald. If you need hit stick with the Rigid Autumn’s Glow. Otherwise use one of the Scarlet Rubies (the AGI if Survival, AP if MM or BM). Just ignore the color of the socket (unless the bonus is great).
As far as the belt buckle I would definitely go that way rather than spending the gold on an epic gem. The difference between a +16 AGI and +20 AGI gem is much smaller than adding a whole second gem. And the buckles are quite cheap in general.
If it’s for a different class then please just ignore this post
Well, I’m apparently annoying somebody with my saronite mining (or I’ve encountered a crybaby). I suspect this person just doesn’t understand the concept of “first come, first served” on mining nodes. Yesterday, as I mined a titanium node, I got a whisper from another lvl 80 pally with the oh-so-clever-name of “Nicksdad” (which is about on par with a female toon I spotted named “Momoffour”)*. I assume I must have just beat him to the node because he whispered at me, “Ahhhhhhhhh!” I assumed he was just jokingly expressing frustration at getting beat to the node (there was nobody in sight when I descended upon the node, so I got there first fair and square), so I chuckled and continued on my way. I also elected not to whisper back with, “Hey, dumbass, learn to spell! It’s ‘Aaaaaaaaah!’ not ‘Ahhhhhhhhh!’”
So today I had just finished mining a saronite node and I got another whisper from the same guy. This time he said, “Hey, ur mom’s calling u.” Dude, I’m betting I’m at least 10 years older than you …
I got my satisfaction, though. I spotted a saronite node, but saw that this guy (he’s easy to spot - he has one of those red & black gryphons) had beat me to it. So I continued on (without complaining at him!) to the next yellow dot on my minimap, which turned out to be my fifth titanium node of the day
I’m distinctly remembering a thread a couple years ago in MPSIMS or IMHO where somebody was puzzled by people who, online, choose to identify themselves by their relation to somebody else instead of presenting their own identity. Online nicknames like those I cited above, as well as things like “Bob’s Wife” or “Jill’s Man”.
It’s a bit pricey for me – I can mine, but just got the last point I needed to be able to mine saronite. And none of my guildies have gotten that far with blacksmithing. I guess I need to poke my acquaintances to see who can.
And yeah, this is for my BM hunter. So it sounds like I should be bedazzling her with hit, then. What do you consider a great bonus, though? The blue socket has a +8 AP bonus; which isn’t much when considered in comparison with other gear, but I’m not sure how sockets tend to run.
Thanks for the advice – I’ll have to start poking around on the AH more seriously.
Yep, I levelled fishing from about 390 to 450 in the fountain, or in the sewers looking for the pet rat. Got all the coin achievements; never did get that damn rat.
Speaking of Saronite…I have about 400 bars and about 600 ores just taking up space in my main’s bank. If anyone on Cairne (Horde) needs some for blacksmithing or prospecting, let me know…or if you want me to craft some level 78 blue plate…might need some eternal fire though for some of the items.
Well, for a +8 AP bonus you’re really choosing between +16 Hit and +8 Hit / +12 Stam / 8 AP. Or +32 AP vs. +20 AP / +12 Stam. Since Stamina is pretty much a wasted stat (unless you’re soloing or have a talent that converts it to AP), the first is going to be better in pretty much all cases, IMO.
An important thing to look at is how far you are from “hit cap” which depends on what type of things you do with this character. If it’s just questing, then the hit cap is pretty low (5% chance to miss, assuming your weapon skill is maxed - this 164 hit rating if you didn’t take any Focused Aim). If you’re planning on running 5-man dungeons then you need 7% +hit, or 197 hit rating. For raids it jumps to 8% / 263. These numbers are all for level-80, it scales down from there. Getting to the hit cap will have the biggest per-point increase in your DPS.
To answer you’re question the only bonuses I’ve specifically socket for on my current gear are the +6 Hit, +12 AP, and +16 AP (the +12 AP only because I have the talent that converts the Stamina on the Purple gem to AP and the +6 Hit only because it gets me over the cap without having to use another enchant/gem). I skipped the +4 Crit one because it required a blue gem. +8 AP is pretty much the base level-80 AP bonus and isn’t worth giving up +16 AP to get.
I think you’re on the right track - socket for hit until you hit the relevant cap, then socket straight +AP gems (including socket bonuses). The only “bonus” that is critical is the meta gem bonus that Rik was asking about - these are generally pretty awesome, and not to be missed.
Quick question for you hardcores out there: are HealBot and Decursive redundant? Every guide I see says that if you have a class with a debuff dispel (Cleanse, Remove Curse, Abolish Poison, etc.), you should get Decursive ASAP. However, HealBot seems to accomplish the same purpose and has additional functionality on top. Is there some difference that makes them both worth getting or is HealBot sufficient?
… in Dustwallow Marsh (Breezil’s Wreck)? Doesn’t seem to be hurting us, but every time we get near enough, there are those lightning bolts hitting Wolk’. Wassupwiddat?
Also what is creatinating?
And does anyone know what happened with photobucket? I tried to go there to upload the newest pic of Wolkie at 42 and the site asked me to join?
Did I lose all my uploaded pics?
Thanks
Q
ETA: Oh, Christ, never mind about Photobucket! I just didn’t see the log-in!
There is a quest where you have to do something (use an item to zap slime or something like that) while the lightning bolts are charging you.
That’s a debugging message from an addon (QuestHelper?) I’ve been religously updating my addons over the past few weeks and I haven’t seen it in a while.
My draenei fire mage just hit level 22, and at the trainer I learned this new spell, “Scorch”. And … I’m afraid I’m just not seeing the point.
Scorch
41 Mana, 30 yd range
1.5 sec cast
Scorch the enemy for 53 to 65 Fire damage.
How is this such an improvement over …
Fireball Rank 4
95 Mana, 35 yd range
3 sec cast
Hurls a fiery ball that causes 89 to 122 Fire damage and an additional 12 Fire damage over 8 sec.
… that I didn’t get to learn it until level 22?
I mean, okay, ~half the damage for less than half the mana in half the cast time. I can see that maybe being useful in situation where an enemy is almost dead but you don’t have enough mana left for a Fireball or Fire Blast, but other than that …
Come to think of it, druids seem to have a similar situation with a couple Heal Over Time spells (Renew and Rejuvenation, I think), where the one you learn later does considerably less healing than the earlier spell.
I figure there’s got to be a well-considered reasoning behind this, but I’m not seeing it.
Also, anybody else annoyed by this cooldown they put on wand use in the 3.2 patch? I like to use my wand to knock off a mob’s last few HPs instead of spending mana on a spell that would be major overkill. I used to be able to hit my wand hotkey as soon as I finished casting my last spell, and immediately start shooting with the wand. Now there’s this global cooldown when I finish casting that makes me wait to start using the wand, which means the mob can get in at least one more hit on me before I shoot it.
