Hit Nelf Hunter 75, and happened to pick up Direbrew’s Tankard (+ludicrous Stamina). It’s not ideal Hunter Gear, but I think it might be a nice trinket for PvP, where HP is more important. Since I was planning to take Skoll as a Ferocity Pet for PvP, it seems like a good match.
My only problem is that +Agility gear is oddly hard to find right now. Even questing for every last reward and AH-surfing, and the high Hunter Agility, I’ve got over 100 more Sta than Agility.
I’m still so torn between Worgen Druid, Rogue, and Warrior it’s almost painful. And Cataclysm doesn’t come out for such a long time, so it’s doubly ridiculous.
Let me ask about Warrior Rage, 'cuz I don’t get it. I though they got (basically) scaled Rage per hit they deal or take, with a hard maximum (i.e., hard hit gives 5, soft gives 3, etc). However, I now see that they gain variable Rage based on how hard they swing to the point that well-geared Warriors never run out, while under-geared Warriors may as well be swinging pillows for all the Rage they’ll get.
Well, like I said, YMMV. Could be the Dragonlance books are better written, or you and I may just have different taste in literature.
No idea what could have immediately dropped your HP like that. All I can think is that you got slammed with a crit or a crushing blow, and just didn’t see what hit you. If I recall correctly, Coren Direbrew is level 83. The crit could happen if you’re 80 with less than 540 Defense, and the crushing blow could happen if you’re level 79 or lower. Wearing anything other than plate is going to cause you to take a lot more damage, too.
Yay! And grats on your four-piece T9.
As long as you stick to the left going through the portal, it’s not that big of a problem. I was in there the other night on a 53 Mage, and as long as I stayed to the side, I didn’t aggro them.
Note that these are 80s with something like 12,500 HP. They go down easily, so if you have anyone in at least their upper 70s, they should be able to join the group, come in and clear the adds for you, and then leave.
On preview:
smiling bandit, Rage gains for DPS Warriors mainly comes from how much damage they do, while Prot Warriors gain their Rage from taking or avoiding damage. So yeah, DPS Warriors especially tend to face a “gear hump”: on one side of it, they’re constantly Rage starved because they’re not doing enough damage to fuel their next special attack; on the other side, they’re leading the meters because their Rage bar is constantly overflowing and they can spam all the specials they like, limited only by cooldowns.
On the other hand, I think the situation may be a bit different with the Dragonlance property, at least during the time period in question. When WotC bought D&D, they farmed out pretty much all of the Campaign Settings other than Forgotten Realms (and Eberron, which is still the only new campaign setting created under WotC’s auspices). Margaret Weis, who, along with Tracy Hickman, pretty much created Dragonlance, ended up with control of the Dragonlance property. As WotC was not doing anything at all, game-wise, with DL, the various novels became the primary source of lore/canon for the property, and I believe it was Weis herself in charge of the lore, rather than the corporate WotC. WotC was acting simply as publisher.
So Weis & Hickman were guiding the central storyline and major earth-shaking events, and they included hooks to allow other writers to fill in the minor storylines on the side. With the minotaur story, there was more a feel of Weis saying, “I mentioned in such-and-such novel that the minotaur were stirring and invading the elven lands. You write the story telling how the minotaur got to that point.” I’m speculating, of course, but I’m basing my speculation on Weis & Hickman’s various “author’s comments” in many of the novels.
With the WoW novels, OTOH, I get the impression that the entire story was already outlined, with the timeline, events, and characters already laid out, and Knaak was asked simply to flesh it out. Again, though, I’m merely speculating, having not read those novels.
Well, just ran Direbrew for about the 10th time since B-fest started, having lost 3 rolls for mounts already.
On the fourth kill, Coren drops the Ram and the Kodo! We all needed on both, with the agreement that if someone won both they would trade to someone else.
Needless to say, I lost both rolls That makes me 0/5.
w00t! Brewmaster! Actually found a group at a reasonable hour (for some reason I kept seeing all the LFGs starting around 11:00PM, which was about the time I was ready to log off and go [del]look at porn[/del] to bed.
Not one single mount dropped out of 5 attempts, but I ended up with the Bitter Balebrew Charm and the Mithril Pocketwatch. And the remote, but I think everybody gets that the first time, right?
This is the first holiday I’ve gotten a title for Now I just need another year to finish drinking all the BotM Club beers.
I’ve gotten three trinkets and the kodo for my warrior, still want the goat and the remote. I might make a few more tries but haven’t been pushing it too hard lately.
Finally made Crusader and bought the pony for my gruntling. The bank/mailbox/vendor access was a nice surprise, though the four hour cooldown spoils it a little.
I’m getting more frustrated with working second shift and not being able to hang out when the majority of the guild is on, including the week night raids. Something I wasn’t thinking of when I switched there.
So I’ve been totally ignoring Brewfest (aside from helping some guildies out for one crack at Direbrew). But hey, Sen’jin Champion, Horde Champion, Exalted Champion of Sen’jin, and Ambassador, all in one night. (Plus 500 dailies. Yipes.)
You want frustrating? I work as a chef at a convention center, so I work when there’s an event. Which means my schedule is different every week and I never know more than a week ahead of time when I’m going to be working. So I can’t commit in advance to anything
Yay Mining 275! A route of Un’Goro-Silithus->Un’Goro and so on was very profitable last night, I now have enough for a flying mount. Another night like that, and hopefully 300 mining, I will be able to afford the flying mount for the pally I level with who has decided to spend his time gearing up his 80 while I get cash for us both.
I wish! I’ve lost rolls on two remotes, three rams, and two kodos since Brewfest started.
BRD recap: we had three guildies - myself (53 pally tank), healer (52 priest) and a 61 ret pally. We pugged with a 49 mage and 49 shaman. The only problem we had was the aggro radius of the mage and shammy, especially with the lvl 80 Dark Irons right near the entrance. But we managed to take down a couple of bosses and made it all the way to the Grim Guzzler.
Once we had completed the quests we needed there, we had to get the back door open so we plied that one guy with drinks until he caused a scene that triggered the bouncer - who I thought was going to open the door for us. But he attacked us and in the course of the fight our mage used her AoE - aggroing the whole bar. So that was a wipe, and then the shammy had to leave so we called it a night. But I did end up with some nice new plate leggings and a good tanking ring.
Question: those remote transports by the entrance that you can use during Brewfest to tunnel to the Grim Guzzler: are those only available during Brewfest or can you use them any time?
I haven’t seen a remote drop in maybe 10 Coren kills, FWIW.
My guildies wanted a couple DPS to kill Coren last night, so I sent down my hunter who has relatively lame gear (only been on a couple heroics). She already had the mount, as I unlocked the ram vendor two years ago and so she’s grandfathered in to be able to buy rams, so I wasn’t competition for a mount. I was the only melee DPS down there, so I got the Coren’s coaster DPS trinket when it dropped. No one wanted the Stamina/summon Brewmaiden trinket, so they let me grab that for fun. (She’s my only Brewmaster, so it seems appropriate.)
I’m bringing her to one of our Naxx10 runs tonight, and I’m pretty sure I won’t have much competition for gear. Of course, this’ll mean that stuff that would have suited my warlock or tank-druid will drop… :smack:
My main needs a respec, and when I mentioned it in guild chat, the GM whispered me that he’d send me a PM on the guild forum with tips if I wanted him to. I said sure, as he’s always been very helpful to me in the past, and very tactful and pleasant about giving advice. I read over his PM and have taken his advice into consideration. My main is a Beast Mastery hunter and I’d rather neglected the other two trees, which means I miss out on some of the useful early stuff in them. I’m going to put fifty-one points into Beast Mastery and the rest into Marksmanship since a lot of that tree looks very useful to me. I’m also going to tame and train a good Ferocity pet, as I have good Tenacity (worm) and Cunning (spider) ones already. I use the worm almost exclusively now as he’s so useful, but many of the other hunters in my guild like to use Ferocity pets when they’re in a group where the tank is a warrior. The Ferocity pets all look pretty neat, so it’s going to be hard to decide. Maybe I will tame more than one and see how they work out.
I like the Petopia website for hunter pet advice. Just the other day, in my “prep for Naxx10” flurry of activity, I went to Storm Peaks to grab one of their lvl 80 Cavedweller Wolves so that I’d have a leveled-up Ferocity pet for the run. Wolves are cool for their Furious Howl self-and-owner buff to attack power, but admittedly they look kind of boring.
I’m fond of that site. It’s how I found my worm. I was just looking at the pets, and I’d love to catch a spirit beast if I could. I’ve run into a couple of players who have them, and they’re very pretty, as well as apparently being great pets. I have NPCScan to help me look for them, but since it also registers when a tamed one is in the vicinity, it keeps giving me false alarms. However, it does note that they are false alarms.
I can provide some inputs on Hunter talent specs if you’d like, as well as some pet considerations. If you’re mainly doing soloing then Beast Mastery will work for you, and you’ll probably stick with a tenacity pet (I use a turtle myself).
For group efforts though, you’ll be seriously gimping yourself with a Tenacity pet. If you are grouping as BM then you should grab one of the BM-only pets - like a Devilsaur or Spirit Beast. Hell, go for this guy - he looks awesome (although a bit hard to find).
If you decide to do some more serious grouping or raiding you’ll find that BM is hard to do good damage with. The pet control is just so difficult and if you aren’t really good at keeping them up you’re in trouble. You could always grab dual-spec and see if Marksmanship or Survival fits you…
Anyone fighting Hodir should probably have three pieces of frost resist gear in their bags even if they don’t use it (we basically go with zero or one piece of frost resist gear if we are trying for the rare cache but we usually just want to get past Hodir so we can spend the rest of the night wiping on Mimiron or Yogg).
When is all else equal?
I hear your argument about loot councils but it just doesn’t work very well in most guilds and thats where DKP comes in.
Sure, I appreciate any advice you can give me. I do tend to mostly solo, but I have been trying to do more dungeons lately, both for gear and to gain a better idea of how to work with a group. I have been using the worm pretty exclusively, as I said, and I do pretty well with him, but I understand that he may not be the best pet for the job all the time. I was thinking of dual-speccing to Marksmanship maybe when I finally have the money again, since it looks pretty decent.
