Heehee. Yeah, me too. My main is a mage and my almost-main is a DK tank, both blood elves. When I was in my old guild, everybody was amazed to find out I was female–nobody figured it out. (I didn’t talk on Vent–the only reason I let the cat out of the bag was because I became an officer and had to talk on Vent). It’s not that I ever told anybody I was male (or that I wasn’t female)–it simply never came up. So I guess I’m pretty good at “passing.”
The only person who ever figured it out on his own was one guy in my original raiding guild–and he was gay (he told me he was after he guessed my “secret”–he didn’t tell anyone else because he was in the military and was very secretive about it).
No, there’s still an element of DPS race to it. Assuming perfect execution and no PW:S on the blood boils, Saurfang is going to hit his first mark at around 5:00 into the fight. This requires, depending on raid make up, about 3000-3200 dps each on Saurfang to hit the Frenzy before the mark drops. This sounds doable, but remember that the ranged DPS is spending a lot of time kiting/snaring/rooting/killing adds, not damaging Saurfang, so they need to do that much more damage to make up for it. With a couple of rogues melee dps might be able to pick up the slack, but your average group of ilvl 232 wearers is going to have a mark up before Frenzy and pick up another during Frenzy. This group usually can’t afford to sacrifice the first victim of mark, either, as adding that extra 5% to the boss and losing 15-20% of raid DPS makes the enrage timer an issue.
PW:S buys you about an extra minute to Frenzy. This does trivialize the fight a bit.
The guild I’m in now has a whole lot of older players, married/committed couples, out gay men, women in general, and then the expected teenage boy contingent, so I guess we get enough “non-traditional” players. We also require Vent for raids, so your real gender gets tagged fast.
The tauren I know of are pretty much gender-consistent. More women that I know tend to stick to playing female toons than men sticking to playing male toons.
My husband went and made a female troll warrior because he’d read a WoW census that listed them as one of the rarest combinations. Then he changed the gender to female of his troll DK named Apocrypha because everyone assumed anyway that it was a female toon.
Thanks for the responses, everyone. Shot From Guns, that’s almost exactly what my talent tree looks like, and I didn’t even do it on purpose (well the poleaxe part is on purpose, but that’s just because I’m an Orc).
That’s been my experience as well. A male toon is almost always played by a man; a female toon could be a man or a woman. Personally, it took me so long to roll a male alt simply 'cause WoW is one of the few games where I can play a character that matches my gender, no matter what class.
Hahahaha! It sure can seem that way, at least out of those of us who are most actively posting at the moment. Which is funny, 'cause a lot of raiding guilds can tend toward the sausage-fest end of the spectrum. I’ve been in groups where there were a decent number of women, but I don’t think I’ve ever been in a guild where even a 10-man team had half or more female members.
I’d say that bodes well for your future, if you can figure out on your own what tend to be the better Talents to pick up. Not all of it is obvious (especially with Blizzard’s occasional tendency towards obscure, unhelpful, nonspecific, or downright misleading tooltips), so it’s always worthwhile to do your research to figure out what points will actually benefit you best, but having at least an instinct for what’s going to work is very helpful.
To some extent, yes, although it’s worse for girl Belfs - for some odd reason my 8 foot tall Tauren gals just don’t get hit on as much, I don’t know if it’s the size differential, the horns, the excessive body hair, or what - it seems half the time when I’m on my girl Taurens people just assume I’m a guy, and the other half of the time they assume I’m a girl but don’t hit on me. It’s like female Taurens are the fat chicks of WoW - fine for friends, but never asked on a date.
My human mage currently has a stalker, believe it or not. Everytime I’m on her this kid (he has to be a kid, I think he’s young enough to be my grandson) follows me around like a puppy, when he isn’t blatantly hitting on me. Doesn’t matter how many times I tell him I’m pushing fifty and happily married, he sees cute little girl toon and will NOT go away!
The assumption that female toon = female player is also why you periodically see in the forums a call to forbid people from playing anything but their own gender. Seems these goofs want the assurance that the females they’re hitting on actually ARE female for fear Teh Gay if they turn out to be guys in real life and/or just do not get it that girls/women are NOT there solely for their own pleasure and are actual human beings in their own right who - surprise! - want to play the game maybe instead of being pestered by horny jerks.
I’m in a guild called Victoria’s Secret on Shandris - the membership requirement is that your character is female. As usual, though the players are 50-90% male at any given time - this has caused MANY freak-outs among the insecure jackasses who think people who show up in female toons WANT to be harassed.
I also enjoy it when I go into vent for the first time with someone I’ve played with often, and they go "Omigod! You’re a real girl!"
Oh, and by the way - the difference is also true in real life. Men who actually find out how much crap a woman has to put up with on a daily basis in regards to that sort of bias generally have a similar reaction to what you experienced in the game. Obviously, as I’m sure you’ve discovered, there are men willing to treat women as equals - and a lot who aren’t.
Well, a lot of them ARE horribly disfigured AND wear the Marge Simpson 'do…
I tend to have “pretty” undead, but even they don’t get hit on nearly as much as my Belfs, Humans, and Dranei. (Yes, I play almost exclusively female toons)
Not really - Tauren females are kind of butch and masculine compared to other female toons in the game. Hell, I consider them more masculine than the Belf males.
Speaking as a het female, yeah, Tauren males are sexy. What else is there? The Belf males all look/act like stereotypical queens (which is fine, but I’m not interested in gay males, much less the flaming variety), Dranei are called “squidface” for a reason you know, the undead guys are rotting, the orcs are bald which isn’t my thing as I like hair which the Taurens have, the gnomes have pink hair (some of 'em)…
Actually, in real life my husband scratches his butt almost as much as his Tauren toons. Either I’m so used to it that I no longer notice, or I subconsciously find it sexy or something.
I fashioned my toon Yeticalayla, after my wife…a sultry brunette vixen with piercing green eyes, with a mean streak and she’s not afraid to show it. Since I can’t/won’t control my wife IRL, I use my toon as a surrogate…a kick-ass heroine that answers to nobody except me. Sounds kind of weird, by my wife knows that I did this, and would rather have it this way than the other way around…although I do want her to learn to dance like a female belf in a bikini. She said she would once she got the same type of figure as the toon…which she said is highly unlikely.
Other than that…no preferential treatment, nor scorn…although the guy toons like to flirt with my wife…er, toon.
My bank alt is a goofy version of Shirley Manson from Garbage.
Having the same figure as a female Blood Elf is highly unlikely for *any *woman who isn’t anorexic. Seriously, look at 'em sometime. They’re so spindley, it’s kind of creepy.
… Not that I don’t have a couple of female Belf toons, but still.
Although my toon is a Ret Pally, Faceplate of Thunderous Rampage is an excellent piece to have and then get the other 4 pieces of T9 gear at the Argent Tournament like others have said. Now I have to work on the boots, belt, and bracers to get a decent PvE equivalent or better.
I’m a guy (my name here should be a dead giveaway) but all of my most-frequently-played toons are female (with the exception of the new male troll hunter I’ve been playing a lot recently). My primary reasoning is that the camera is positioned behind my characters, which means I’m staring at ass for hours on end. And if I’m going to stare at ass for hours, it’s going to be cute, female ass
My main is a female human paladin, and I really haven’t gotten much “unwanted attention” when playing her. Likewise when playing female night elves, strangely enough, though a lot of that may be that I’ve simply ended up never playing my night elves all that much, so the opportunity hasn’t been there as much. My two female draenei toons, OTOH, get all sorts of attention. My mage was in the SW bank making bolts of cloth one day and I got some human male toon going apeshit and encouraging me to “oh yeeeah, work that hot tailoring action!” My female draenei warrior grouped up with a male nelf rogue in Winterspring the other day, since we were working on the same quest, killing furbolgs with slow respawn timers, and when I did a /dance emote out of boredom while waiting for mobs to respawn he got a little flirty and asked if I can move like that in real life. I said, “Nah, people would look at me funny if I did.” “Why’s that?” “Cuz I’m a dude IRL.” He dropped it after that.
Oddly enough, my female belf paladin doesn’t get it much at all, aside from an occasional light flirt from male belf toons.
I’ll /flirt with a female gnome or dwarf if I’m playing my male gnome or dwarf, but that’s about the only time. Actually, my male gnome will flirt with females of pretty much any species, but that just seems appropriate for some reason. He always follows the /flirt with a /laugh.
I don’t think the male trolls blink either. It’s gotta be the weed, mon. They’re all stoned
Hmmm, I may be playing my Arms warrior “wrong” - she uses 2H maces and swords. Are axes/polearms preferred simply because of the talent benefit, or are there other reasons?
I now play eve online more than WOW [got burned out, will be back after a while =)] and the corp I joined a month ago was part of an alliance in 0.0 space … and the first day I was on teamspeak with them, I got greeted with that many times =)
I love the alliance guys in FIO1-8, the gang that are on when I am in game are mostly brits and europeans of various flavors … I get this mental image of dainty little me surrounded by hulking europeans and brits [they are as memory serves a scot, 2 brits, a norwegian, a dane, 2 swedes and a couple romanians]
You know, that’s kind of my reasoning too. Well, that and that the fact that aside from tauren, dwarf and orcs, I don’t really like the looks of any of the male models.
Then again my druid is a male NE, of course since he is feral I spend most of the time looking at a bear ass either way.
No, no other reasons, the Poleaxe talent is just much better than the Mace and Sword talents, so all things being equal Arms Warriors go with the axe/polearm.
Heh, once I was on with my Orc warrior and some naked female nelf whispered me, asking if I wanted to cyber. My response? “Ew, no! I like my women green, bald, and with huge canine teeth.” I got no more whispers from her. I’m a dude with all male toons, btw.
My main is male and I guess I consider him ‘me’ in wow if you know what I mean but I now have 2 alts and both are female, a Gnome and a Draenei. The ass thing I get with the Draenei even with the tail but the Gnome? Not so much. Though the pink pigtails up the cute factor this is slightly ruined by the Felguard hovering near by.
Our Guild bank was cleared yesterday and we’re assuming an account hack. Annoying.
Yeah, we got our bank restored the other day. We’re starting to get annoyed with the refills, since everything comes back and our bank is overflowing with crap. Guess I better get back to working on cleaning it.
We had someone log in yesterday who joined maybe a couple months or so ago, quickly removed one of his characters that he’d added, and has barely been on since, friend-of-a-guildie or something. Immediately after discovering that he’d been hacked he starts whining about how we should help re-gear him. Um, no. Only one of us even knows you, and there are these things called GMs who can get your shit back if you haven’t been hacked too often. Get yourself an authenticator already, and cool your heels until the GMs fix you up.
The guild bank was untouched - newbs and the generally unreliable (in terms of helping other guildies, etc.) do not have withdrawal privileges.
