World of Warcraft General Discussion

I just need School of Hard Knocks and the UP ach to finally have my hot little mitts on the Long Strange Trip drake  This is giving me another reason to dust off my PVP set (I’d been neglecting it recently since I was so tired and we mostly pvp late at night).

I’ve also been having a lot of fun with Lil Sparky’s Workshop – it’s rather nice for deciding which glyphs give me the most bang for my buck, although I do still have to go through class by class to figure out the popular glyphs. I was also surprised to see that Nesingwary guns still sell, which isn’t a bad bit of profit over the cost of the mats on my server.

That said, hackers suddenly seem to be busier now – one of our officers got hacked and shanghaied off server as did a shaman we run with sometimes. They’re both working on getting things back and several more of our guildies are getting authenticators as a result. As the unofficial guild tech support, I’ve been busily whacking people over the head with the list of security precautions and postcautions (keyloggers, viruses, what have you). :frowning:

So, I’m leveling as hard and as fast as I can on my main in order to try and hit 77 before the end of the week. I was 74 on Friday, and now I’m at 76, so I’m hoping it won’t be too bad. I want to get the UP achievement. I know I won’t get the title, though, because I’ve never, ever PvP’d before, and my friends all say the requirements are a bit difficult.

I’ve also started a couple of paladins that I’m actually getting to play with people I’ve met, which is kind of really awesome. Though I’m super-nervous 'cause I’m still kind of a noob.

I use Recount whenever I make a substantial change to my gear. I know it’s not a perfect metric, but it’s better than me guessing at whether it’s helped or not. I don’t spam it though (actually, I don’t have it installed; my friend does and I just ask him when we do a random together. He whispers it.).

Did VH a few times. It seems to be difficult to tank. When it’s good, it’s really good. The last one, though, was Needing everything and, upon inspection, was wearing a pair of grey (!) cloth (!!) shoulders. As a DK. Which would’ve been fine if he, say, overleveled the instance or was really good, but he was near min-level, unfamiliar with the instance, and it ended up being another case of roving aggro and uncontrolled mobs (yay 30-second demo warlock tanking!). The only way we kept alive we because a friend of mine who was in the group is a really, really good 80 pallie healer (and way overleveled the instance, and was nice enough to do it with us just to help me level).

I’m going for the Explorer title, and all I have left is Kalimdor. Christ, it’s hilly.

I got mine yesterday on my DK. Fortunately, some of my guildies either needed School of Hard Knocks too or else they wanted to help us out, so I was able to get the EoTS, AB, and WSG one with help. Otherwise I think it would have taken me forever (and a lot of frustration).

For future reference, yup. You clear out the guys who spawn by the doorway where you first come up, and then you either go left or right. You clear out the first group of melee and casters that are closest to you, then you LOS the big spider using a pillar (or have a DK DG it into place). Then you pull the melee guys that are still running around. Now you can have you group move up along that side, until you’re close to the group that’s in front of the next doorway. You LOS them around the corner of that. Once that group’s clear, you use the doorway to again LOS the group that’s in the middle of the next room. Once that room is clear, you run straight down the middle of it to Marrowgar. You have to be careful with your AOEs and positioning, though, or you can pull the pack from the middle of the first room.

My two cents: Try it anyway. I never PvP, and I still got everything done last year. Which isn’t to say most of it wasn’t a tedious pain in the tuchus, but I got it done. Plus, you can count on the fact that a good number of the opposite faction will be in the exact same boat as you, and will sometimes even try to collaborate to traid achievements.

… I have not words.

Give it a try; you never know. If you’ve never done AV before I’d try to get someone to help you locate one of the banners you have to capture. The others might take a few tries but are definitely doable, especially if your teammates are willing to help each other get the achievement.

School of Hard Knocks can be very, very easy if the opposing faction helps out. I got the achievement in about two hours yesterday; while I simply got lucky in grabbing the flag in EotS, I got the objectives in AB, AV, and WSG primarily because both factions were collaborating. I was in one tower in AV with about 10-15 other Horde and 1 Alliance, and the Alliance player would defend the tower after a Horde assaulted it, so everyone got a turn at it.

It really depends on how lucky you are with the BGs you get into. The first AB I got into yesterday, they were playing for real, and the only Alliance bases available for assaulting were protected by some vicious rogue duos. The second one, 5 Alliance and 5 Horde had gathered around a flag and were trading it back and forth amiably. …At least until a Hordie decided to [del]be a prick[/del] play the BG straight and jumped into the group of Alliance with Whirlwind. Man, were the Hordies pissed. I’m just glad I’d gotten my achieve before then. :stuck_out_tongue:

Since you can’t always rely on the other side to be nice, here’s a useful guide to getting the objectives without extra help. It’s still luck based, but that should give you some good pointers on how to handle the BGs.

Mohawk grenades are live on realms again.

God dammit.

Annoyance and weirdness today …

First random heroic of the day, I got Oculus. Not my favorite, but oh well. Dropped a Fish Feast, hit everybody in the party with Kings, sat down to drink to restore my mana, and we got started … well, everybody but me got started. Because my mouse stopped working. I asked everybody to wait up because I was having mouse problems. I couldn’t figure out the problem quickly, so I apologized and let the group know I’d have to drop, because I didn’t want to hold everybody up. Except I couldn’t drop, because without a functioning mouse I couldn’t click to “leave party”. In fact, I couldn’t even simply log out without the mouse. (Are there command line commands to let me do these things?) So I told them to go ahead and kick me, which they did. A few minutes of fiddling with the mouse and I determined the batteries were dead (wireless mouse). This surprised me, since the packaging claimed 8 months of battery life and I’ve only had this thing for maybe a month or a bit longer. But then again, they were the batteries that came with it, so who knows how old they were. Anyway, popped in a fresh pair of rechargeable AAs, and I was good to go (and I plugged in my battery charger with 4 more AAs, in easy reach for quick backup. And I discovered that, apparently, getting kicked from a group doesn’t incur a “deserter debuff”, so I was able to queue up again right away.

A couple dungeons later, the RDF put me in AN. The splash screen came up, but the loading progress bar didn’t progress. I waited, and waited, and waited, and waited, staring at the splash screen, and was starting to think I’d been disconnected, when I got booted back to where I started before the RDF window popped up. But I saw I was still in the group, so I clicked the button to “Teleport to dungeon”. Again there was a long wait, but the progress bar finally showed up and dumped me into the instance. Apparently this happened to everybody. I said, “That was weird” and somebody else said, “And it’s not even patch day!”

Still later, I queued specifically for UP, brought out my orphan, and got [Hail to the King, Baby!] All I need now is School of Hard Knocks for the title, but I have my doubts as to whether I’ll get that one.

I ran enough heroics today to accumulate enough Triumphs to purchase the Furious Gladiator’s Scaled Helm to complete the full Furious Gladiator’s PvP set, and enough Stone Keeper’s Shards to exchange for Honor Points and bump me up enough to buy the Relentless Gladiator’s Greaves of Triumph.

Last night I found this fun site: Let Me WowHead That For You

Oh yeah … last night, I don’t know if I encountered a griefer or what, but the RDF put me in H:ToC, the healer died during the initial jousting segment … and then went AFK and unresponsive to rez attempts.

Ugh, so the guild I got all excited about now may have filled its tank slot already. Damnation–I’ve never before apped and not been accepted. :frowning: Keeping my fingers crossed regardless…

There should be. Can’t tell you what they are off the top of my head, though. Maybe WoWWiki has an article on slash commands?

Reason #432 I don’t like wireless mice. They’re nice for a laptop when you’re actually traveling with it, but other than that, IMO, they’re more trouble than they’re worth. (Slower response time + the battery issue.)

Yup, when at all possible, you should always try to be kicked or be the last person left in the group. That way, you avoid the extra wait.

Did you get the “Additional instances could not be launched” error? It can happen, even with the RDF. The solution is just to do what you guys did–use the teleport button.

I’m not sure what that’s supposed to be doing? Putting a search phrase in and hitting “Search” doesn’t even appear to kick off a function for me. No progress bars in the status bar, no whirling window…is work server blocking something?

/logout will log you off to the character selection screen.
/script LeaveParty() (case sensitive) to leave party

It’s like Let Me Google That for You, but for Wowhead. Entering a search term generates a LMWTFY link, which you can then copy and paste to someone. When they go to that URL, they’ll see the search term being entered as a Wowhead search, and it will then take them to the results.

Next time, try copying and pasting the URL it generates for you. You’ll see how it works.

Ah, I see. I’ve never heard of Let Me Google That For You before this, so I wasn’t aware of the reference. I still don’t see the utility, though…couldn’t you just go to WoWhead (or Google) in the first place?

Sure you could. So could your lazy-ass fellow message board posters who don’t bother to search for the answers to dumb questions that could be solved in two seconds; oh no, they gotta open a whole new thread.

Your snarky response option is to paste a LMGTFY/LMWHTFY response with the blank filled in.

Exactly. It’s a snarky way of giving them the information they requested, while passive-aggressively informing them that they could have just taken the two goddamn seconds to do the research on their own.

Meh. I’ve never been a huge fan of “Google is your friend”, anyway, so those websites are pretty much useless to me. When he said they were “fun”, I thought he was serious.

Well, they’re fun for those of us who keep getting asked the same five questions over and over by people who are too damned lazy to look things up on their own.

Yeah, my guild has a new member who’s a friend of one of our ADD Teenage Boy contingent, and he was all LOLz over the idea of any of his guildies being parents, much less us middle-aged folks. He keeps asking questions that none of us have any experience with, and have told him, like how you gem a Holy pally for PvP. We’re not exactly gigantic PvPers, and the one PvPing pally that we do have has only been Prot and Ret - and wasn’t online, either. His response to “dunno”, “our one PvP pally isn’t online”, “look it up”, “check Elitist Jerks”, etc., is slightly rephrasing the question a minute later. :smack:

See, I was getting a bit frustrated about BDL’s second straight week of not having enough people to raid, and then I read a post like this and remember what the alternative looks like.
