World Series of Poker 2011 thread

My interest was in having you provide concise summaries as needed.

985 players sat for Session 1B. Michael “the Grinder” Mizrachi was one of the most notable players to bust out on Day 1B.

According to my post from last years thread, there were 1125 and 1489 players in Days 1A and 1B. So entrants are WAY DOWN from last year, about 25%-28%. I was expecting a drop from the Black Friday, but not THAT much.

Days 1C and 1D players are expected to be a lot more numerous, but they are each going to be about 2700 players to reach last years entrants of 7319. I think they have resources to handle about 3000 players in one day.

Was the starting stack 30k?

Yes, Starting stack is 30K.

2181 players in Day 1C. More than 1A & 1B combined. Got an outside shot to reach 7000 players as they already have over 2K players registered for today’s play. Hellmuth played on Saturday, but had a bad day has only 11K chips.

I am getting the results, here

are we still doing the thursday give chips to mensa and make me look like a buffoon thing?

OMG, Peeker, where have you have been! I have missed you, well not really you, but your chips! And yes, it is still a rule to give me your chips. Welcome back!

One thing I like to track is which former Main Event champs are still in the hunt. Any easy way to get this info on an up-to-date basis?

I found this interesting.. checking in last position, on the river, while holding the nuts, gets you a 1 round penalty:

Source.

Why is that? I mean, obviously it’s not a very smart play, but since when does being stupid get you a penalty? Or is it because of potential collusion?

yes, it is viewed as collusion and such a hand was shown last year on ESPN during the 2010 Main Event. Darvin Moon, 2009 M.E. Runnerup, checked the nuts when he was last to act. he didn’t know the rule and IIRC, he was penalized one orbit. I don’t think it was collusion, but I can see scenarios where it might be.

I also would like to know this, if anyone finds it.

Ah, having just agreed with you, I found it.

Minor Spoilers here, with status of former champs

Nicely done, thanks.

Hmmm, looking at the wiki link of past ME Champions, it appears Chris “Jesus” Ferguson is not playing in the Main Event. I wonder if he is boycotting like Phil Ivey?

Still seems a daft rule though, you could always just min-bet to not bust your buddy?

And what if I play poker at the same level as Phil Ivey, sometimes wanting to muck the best hand because even though it’s -EV for that particular pot, I think it’s +EV for the tournament?

There is no rule against mucking the best hand. And if he had won that hand, he might have gone on to win the Main Event. Or he could have busted on the very next hand. No one knows.

I still think it is a good rule, although I think it is viable strategy not to bet the nuts, for instance you know that he will not call and you want to see what he had to see if your read was correct.

Hellmuth has three second place finishes so far. He must be hell to be around right now.

As opposed to in general?

Some Phil Hellmuth news:

He made Day 2 but thought his day 2 was on Tuesday. He had 11K to start the day, and Mike the Mouth Matusow convinced hotel security to break into his hotel room to wake him. He was blinded down to under 8K before he finally got to his table. Apparently he has built his stack up to 18K.

Antes and blinds are 100/400/800 so he only has about 9 orbits. A pretty short stack.

Hellmuth survived Day 2a. Building his stack to a somewhat respectable 65k and approximately 50 BB. Kid Poker also survived at 110k. A couple notable celebs are also into Day 3 Brad Garrett (56k) and Jason Alexander (167k). Day 2b is about to start.
