My mom heard about a contest to design the WTC memorial, much like the Vietnam War memorial. She has conscripted me to find out if such a contest exists and if so, what the guidelines are. Being the budding artist that she is and the loving son that I am, I turned to Google. What I thought would take seconds led me on wild goose chase. I have found fleeting references to it, but mostly programs where architectural firms send in their designs for the new buildings. I need information on the actual memorial. My nerves are frazzled and I have no idea where to turn to now except you wonderful Dopers. Please help me! NY dopers, here’s your chance to give my mother a chance! Thanks a billion!
I’m pretty sure the “contest” is invite-only. The decision of what to build on the WTC site is a private one, unlike with the Vietnam Memorial (although this may change). The NYC Port Authority currently holds the reigns.
I’ve been hearing about it on CNN. I think they have links to it and explain it. Also, I’m pretty sure you can submit your own ideas and look at some of the ideas others have submitted.
It is probably the most comprehensive WTC rebuilding website there is. There is even a link to a do-it-yourself memorial design planner. Tell mom to knock herself out.
