What role did the League of Nations play in the onset of the Second World War?

Unless you want to pick nits. It’s possibly arguable that it was to weak to prevent WWII – a strong League might have emboldened the (future) Allies to step in and stop Germany’s aggressions earlier, when they went into the Sudetenland(sp?). And you might equally argue that the League’s focus on Europe ignored Japan’s aggression in China.

It provided a forum to walk out of in a huff (Japan). It provided agressor nations with an easy means to see how weak and indecisive their potential opponents and next victims would be; witness Italy and Ethiopia in 1936.
