I’m not sure what I think. In and of itself, it suggests a decent Zombie movie (Or at least a big budget one). But it sure as hell is not a movie version of the World War Z book that you’ve got there.
But in all truth, I’m not really sure that the format of the book, could have been successfully translated into a movie format as is. Well not is the ‘average’ movie going public is as is suggested by what movies are popular.
One thing, it’s been quite a while since I read WWZ, but I don’t recall them being ‘fast’ zombies like what is suggested in the trailer.
I agree completely. I enjoyed the book; I figured if they ever made a movie out of it they’d probably focus on one story line. I thought we were watching the Battle of Yonkers when the clip started. I’d suppose that’s going to be mentioned somewhere so they can cling to the notion that the movie is “based” on the book.
On the other hand, it looks like a completely kick-ass zombie movie and I can’t wait to see it.
I think (emphasis on the think) that World War Z could have been done as a movie, by someone who understood the book and was really good at making not your typical movie, but I agree - this movie does not bear a resemblance to the book AT ALL.
I’ll still go see it, of course, but I wish they wouldn’t call things by the wrong titles. This movie doesn’t seem to have anything in common with the book of the same name.
This one could go either way. I enjoyed the book and it would have worked far better as a mini-series or a one or two season TV show. This looks more like the 28 x Later series (which I didn’t like at all) writ large.
As much as I would have loved Ken Burns’ The Zombie Apocalypse, after a little more reflection this movie might just work out. World War Z was a collection of zombie stories, each playing on particular tropes. As such, it seems perfectly reasonable to use it as a setting for any sort of zombie movie you want to make. Just borrow a set piece or two from the book, and use the rest as a rich source of world building and back story. This particular movie could end up as a smarter-than-average zombie action movie, and I’d be OK with that.
Apparently it still somewhat follows the individual story format of the book. It’s an older analysis of the script at the time. Who knows what has been tweaked since.
Fast zombies wasn’t expected, but I’ve never thought slow zombies could take over – they’re too easy to kill. Fast zombies, though, kill everyone. You can’t get head shots in time if there’s more than one coming at you.
My brother had a nice idea that when a zombie’s fresh, it’s as agile as when it was alive, but it slows up as it decays. Thus as time goes on it gets easier.
Answer… Definitely not a movie based on World War Z the book, that’s for damn sure.
That said, it still looks like a pretty good movie, but I have officially given up hope of this being a good adaptation of the book. Because it’s not. At all.
The book was straight-up terrifying. Based on the trailer though, the movie doesn’t look as though it will be, but I’ll still go and watch it. I’m a sucker for the apocalyptic.
Looks pretty epic. A big-budget, large-world zombie movie. Most zombie movies seem to follow around small, rag-tag groups a la The Walking Dead, with smallish sets and locales. This appears to have full-scale military engagements throughout, instead of a half-assed, budget-conscious attempt to show the military at the beginning and then have them all die in 5 minutes. It’ll be different, anyway.
Between this and The Walking Dead, I figure zombies will take a dirt-nap for awhile from overexposure.
This looks terrible, but terrible horror movies is what I revel in. I hope the trailer is somehow not doing the finished film justice, but the fast zombies alone really kill the tone.
I don’t think there’s any particular reason they couldn’t have done a Ken Burns’ WWZ (great title, btw). It would have been super interesting to follow the book format and watch events unfold, sometimes out of order. Again though, maybe they DO that to some extent, and the trailer is more to get the Brad Pitt fans and the uninitiated to the book peeps in the seats.
One thing stood out to me. The fast zombies seem to be tearing each other apart while flowing forward. There has to be a a finite number of zombies. If they are tearing each other apart just by moving it shouldn’t take too long before there aren’t many left.
Yeah, clearly not hewing close to the book, if it even uses any element other than the name!
Those are definitely not Brooks style zombies. And that’s fine, it could still be a good movie with fast zombies. But I agree with An Gadaí, the superfast swarming mass thing looks pretty ridiculous. Still, it could be good despite that. I like that the military has a flotilla and that Brad’s family appears to be safe there, at least for the bulk of the film - I don’t think I could handle an entire movie about trying to protect your kids from the zombie onslaught.
I’m coming this from a different perspective than most people here, I imagine, but I didn’t really care for the book at all and ended up giving up about 3/4 of the way through.
