World's Cheapest Laptop: $35

An interesting article about India’s plan to create a cheap laptop for students.

I am sure there are flaws, and we’ll see if it does get off the ground, but that they are even trying to make a cheap laptop for students is a wonderfully worthwhile idea.

It looks like they’ll have a monopoly on that market for a while, because I can’t imagine many companies wanting to try and undercut them and sell one cheaper.

As an educational tool, it’s a hit if they can produce it. I believe it’s a glorified cell phone with a bigger screen. The memory is probably minimal as all the information is being downloaded in real time. The article says it will be open to add new devices. I sure love to play with one, but that’s about all it could do for me I’m afraid.

These announcements about dirt cheap (sub $100) useful notebooks are always full of shit in the end once they start applying real world metrics to build costs and are (IMO) of little real world use in mud hut, dirt floor infrastructure.
