World's Oldest Man/UK's Oldest WWI Vet Dead at 113

Henry Allingham. Thank you, sir, and RIP. :frowning:

BBC TV reran footage of him meeting with a 109-year-old German WWI vet sometime in the past couple of years.

RIP.

I remember seeing a story about Henry Allingham last year. 2008 was the 90th anniversary of the founding of the RAF. He was (so the BBC said in their story) the last member of the RAF on 1st April 1918 still living. So the RAF put on a flypast of the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight for his birthday last year.

Amazing old man, really.

Thanks for post this, Siam Sam, it’s an amazing story. Here’s more.

Man, this guy was at Ypres and The Sommes, had a wicked sense of humor and a gorgeous wife who stayed married to him for fifty years. I would’ve loved to spend an evening or twenty in his company.

RIP

What amazes me is that a man has just died, who was born during the reign of Queen Victoria.

Got to witness the battle of Jutland too. Incredible memories to keep alive for so long. The children he spoke to in his final years were fortunate to have such a unique school visitor.

The thing that really strikes me when Extremely Old People are discussed is the fact that they (like Allingham) had children who have already died from old age. This is just horrific when I think about it, watching my two-year-old play, and the only reason I never want to live to 113.

If you had him in the “Death Pool”, would you lose 13 points?

Sorry! :smack:
