What ‘good reason’ is there to cry about fallen soldiers?
They all volunteers, they knew they might be sent in harm’s way, where determined enemy will try to kill them, and they still took the job. They knew perfectly well what they were doing.
Besides, they kill people. Didn’t you call them ‘war criminals’ more then once, yourself?
Well of course it was a stunt…didn’t you see her dicing up onions on the cutting board that was on her lap? The Pubbies made her do it! It’s all a game to them!
Good grief rjung, where do you even find such drivel and how can you possibly in good conscious buy into such?
I don’t think the questioning, as long as it’s within the boundaries of acceptable decorum, should be hampered by overindulgences. It’s far too important a nomination and Senator’s concerns need to be satisfied. If it’s going to get difficult then the family can stay away. I’ll agree with you too that the media’s to be admonished for taking up the banner.
But that woman’s done nothing wrong and it’s shameful to criticize her for being upset when her husband’s character gets called into question. Plus, not only did it strike me as genuine but I think she made a noble effort to supress it as much as possible and left when she felt she was losing that ability.
“Cow”? “Stunt”? You two have fucking got to be kidding me.
I don’t really care if you feel sorry for her or not. I also don’t think she’s a victim, and I really don’t think anyone in this thread said or implied that she was. What I think she is, is a woman who loves her husband, who was not prepared for the “confirmation process” (which I’ve decided must equal ‘opportunity for self-aggrandizing speeches by senators’ after watching hours of it), and who had a problem controlling her emotions. That sort of thing does happen, you know, and it happens to some perfectly nice, reasonable people, who you would never think of hurling middle-school names at.
Again; what’s the deal with family members at confirmation hearings? I hold nothing against Mrs. Alito for her response; I’m sure being the spouse of a politician, any politician, is extremely stressful and some of the things said by the opposition are hurtful. But when was it decided that having spouses/mothers in law/children present at confirmation hearings was a good idea? I do not believe her outburst was staged, but I do find it more than passing curious that she was there to begin with. Especially considering that everyone expected these hearings to be heated. The breakfast with the president, the compliment to Mr. Alito’s mother, the apologies to family for having to sit through yada yada yada… it seems very orchestrated.
Talking about making a big deal about this, Chris Matthews announced today on Hardball that he thought the whole thing was over (ie, Alito won) the minute Ms. Alito left in tears. He had a great clip of Biden being an idiot, which I missed. I guess Biden put on a Princeton baseball cap when he was quizzing Alito about CAP. WTF? Is that what we’ve come to? I always thought Biden was one of the more dignified Senators. I guess it’s like those reality shows-- people will make fools of themselves whenever you point a TV camera in their direction.
Oh well. The tables will be turned on the Republicans before long, and it’ll be their turn to be clowns.

You know, I’ve got to ask. If Roe v. Wade is so goddamned important, why the fuck doesn’t some liberal put up legislation to make it an ammendment to the Constitution? That way there is no goddamned question about a woman’s ‘right’ to abort a child?
