World's strongest man dead. At age 104. From being hit by a van

Joe Rollino. Very interesting life and death.

Hysterical: The caption under the picture of the dumbbell mentions he once lifted 3200 lbs. The weights on the pictured dumbbell amount to less than 30 lbs.

Yes… interesting life. Never heard of him, though.

Would loved to have met him.

I believe it was his back lift record that Paul Anderson broke - by more than 3000 pounds.

Perhaps my fave book ever - The Gypsy’s Curse by Harry Crews - has a strongman as one of the main characters. Caused me to be even more interested in these facinating guys.

Rollino was an amazing guy. Wonder how much damage the van took! :stuck_out_tongue:

I wonder if anyone had him in the Death Pool…

Very sad ending for a colorful life.

Ironic because an old strongman trick involved cars. I remember Ivan Putski (strongman and a wrestler in the 1970’s) would brace himself against a brick building and put his legs on a car bumper and lock them. They’d gun the car and the tires would smoke.

It was very dangerous. They’d cheat a little by putting oil under the tires. Still, there was always a chance the tires would grab and the guy would be crushed.

I bet this guy did the same trick years ago. A van finally gets him. Life is odd sometimes.

The New York Times has its own story on Rollino. It includes a picture of him bending a spike with his teeth, although his hands are certainly on there, too. As far as his strongman feats go, the most impressive point is this:

It also includes a fairly recent picture, and the man doesn’t look anything close to 100.

Why, and get -4 points?

Indeed. I didn’t think of the age factor before I posted. It’s my first Death Pool, so I’m going to cut myself a little slack.

The radio news report also mentioned that he knew four languages. Quite a accomplished man.

I think that if you have someone over 100 years old in the Death Pool who dies of something other than natural causes, you should get 200 points minus the age of death.

At least he may get a girlfriend from this little incident. Dorothy Geeben, America’s oldest active mayor, dead at 102
