Worried. Dog ate nylon knee-high stocking.

Apparently Dottie ate at least one and probably two nylon knee highs sometime between Saturday afternoon and Wednesday afternoon. Found part of one hanging out of her backside. She has been/seems perfectly OK: eating, drinking, pooping, energetic, happy, normal behavior. Consulted a vet tech on live chat and gave her a little olive oil; the tech also confirmed the signs of blockage that I’d already Googled. I am staying up all night observing her and calling our vet first thing in the morning. And while I’m up, I’m surfing on the topic, of course, and reading everything from “passed/digested, no problem” to “expensive surgery, possibly fatal.” If I have to bag the marathon I’m supposed to run this Sunday (my second) to watch/take care of her, I will, no questions asked. Simultaneously hoping it doesn’t come to that. Banking on the fact that she’s exhibited a cast-iron constitution in the past* and is showing no ill effects so far. Still, positive thoughts appreciated.

*She has a known “dirty female underwear” (mine) fetish (she will eat just the crotch, yuck) and has eaten assorted other unexpected items and passed/digested them. It’s hard to keep track of what will entice her, and we try to keep her on reasonable lockdown (laundry/stinky stuff out of reach or behind a gate or door). But I forgot and left a travel bag unzipped on the floor. :frowning: If anything happens to her I’ll be devastated. She’s my baby.

If it makes you feel better, I have performed several “sock-ectomies” from the German shepherd’s hind end, and he’s still with us. It actually got bad enough at one point that, if I could identify the previous owner of the sock - who had foolishly left said former sock on the floor within Mojo’s reach - I would call upon that person to remove the remnants. And Mojo decidedly does not have a cast iron digestive system.

Best of luck, though!

Thanks. Online word is that nylons, even knee-highs (as opposed to “regular” socks), are particularly dangerous because they are so stretchy and can strangle the intestine. We know not to pull on anything sticking out, but on the vet tech’s advice, we did cut it off so Dottie can’t pull on it. It’s pretty shredded, not too identifiable as a section, so I’m hopeful that she’s digesting the rest.

So far, so good. Three and a half hours until I can call the vet.

It can go either way (passed, no problem, to fatal), and I’m hoping for the first outcome. Good luck, and hopefully by the time you take her to the vet most of it is out and all that’s left on your dog is a bad tummyache.

She just produced what appears to be the remainder of one stocking, all wadded up. In the daylight I checked their kennel and found just regular poop (and some nettles with my bare hands as I was weeding to aid in the search, yay). Still plan to watch and call the vet when he opens.

This too shall pass.

Just talked to Dr. N. As usual, he was the voice of reassurance. (I <3 our vet.) He says as long as all systems seem to be go, she should be fine. Possibly may see some constipation, but if one has passed, the other probably preceded or will follow. And she should be fine to go to the boarding kennel tomorrow night. I will still worry about her, though! She’s my baby . . . and obviously she loves me a little too much, as it’s always MY stuff she goes after. <sigh> Kids, I tell ya.

You must have tasty-smelling feet

Glad she is almost free and clear!

One time my doodle snatched a popsicle from my 5 year old and swallowed it stick and all. She managed to pass the stick in one piece but I was a nervous wreck until it came out. Action figures, legos and crayons also make guest appearances in my yard.
