Maybe the pronouncing person had a head cold?
If I heard someone say “worry ward,” I would think they were a little dim. If they tried to explain why they were correct ny using the logic in the OP, I’d think they were a frigging idiot.

You shouldn’t take it for granite that something is spelled the way it sounds to you.
