In 1984, I saw Cloak & Dagger followed by Red Dawn at a drive-in: a kiddie version of a kid fighting the Cold War followed by an adult version of kids fighting the Cold War.
Most of the double features I saw were appropriate for each other. But when my parents took me to see Meatballs followed by Heaven can Wait, I lost interest in the latter and turned around and watched Alien without sound. That movie is quite scary, even without sound.
I remember seeing Where’s Poppa?, a hilarious comedy with George Segal and Ruth Gordon, followed by Joe, a drama about a racist played by Peter Boyle, which ended with a slaughter of “hippies” by Joe and another man. I remember a woman commenting at the end “I wish the first movie had been last.”
