Brought on by me recently re-watching the TNG episode Symbiosis. There’s a scene where Merritt Butrick grabs Riker and gives him an electro-shock, threatening to kill him unless they get their medicine.
I say it’s impossible to watch that scene, look at the ridiculous look on Jonathan Frakes’ face, and keep yourself from laughing hysterically. It doesn’t help that he has to hold that exact pose for about 30 seconds.
Memorably bad blue screen acting: Ewan McGregor. Terrible with Jar Jar in the woods of Naboo in Phantom Menace; terrible with Dex in Attack of the Clones.
Feel free include older movies with generally bad F/X - I just couldn’t think of any that stand out right now.
Cool World. Awful. Who Framed Roger Rabbit? proved that humans interacting with animated characters could be natural enough to suspend disbelief, then Bakshi (as is his wont) came along and slaughtered it.
I was reading in the living room the other night. I had the TV on but with no sound, because a program was coming on that I wanted to watch later. (Easier to look at the TV occasionally than check the clock.)
Anyways, one of the James Bond movies was on, the one with Halle Berry. She was in an airplane that was exploding all around her, so it must have been blue screen. I was struck by the lack of expression on her face. She might have been navigating rush hour traffic. No tension, no fear, just Halle’s pretty face. (Is she afraid of wrinkles?)
But I probably wouldn’t have noticed the bad acting if the sound had been on – the explosions and the musical score would have supplied some tension.
