Though providing a sensible answer to this is difficult, and I don’t claim to be talking of the “worst” in any sense here, but I have always thought there is a special spot in hell reserved for Goering. Goering, it appears, wasn’t anti-semitic. He had no particular issue with Jews, but was willing to involve himself in the Shoah for personal advancement and getting bright shiny things to collect.
Thinking the Jews are the downfall fo Germany and must be destroyed is odious. Knowing that’s bullshit, but being willing to commit genocide to get better seats at the opera? That’s a whole new level of depravity.
Another thought; I understand you are a school boy. Why don’t you submit these questions, in writing, to the faculty of your school? Teachers are supposedly taught how to train and shape young, inquisitive minds whereas we on the SDMB are not, for the most part. How can you trust us to give you the best answers, unless, of course, you are simply looking for self validation and sniggering over what fools we be, to disagree with your preconceived opinions?
Yeah, Goering, on a personal level, was a bigger prick than Hitler, but Goering without Hitler would probably not have come up with the idea, wouldn’t have built the organization to do it, and could never have inspired a nation to go along with it. Without Hitler, there may not even have been a Luftwaffe, and Goering would have retired as an airline pilot, and a general in the toothless Reichswehr.
Going through an interview Albert Speer gave to “Playboy” in June, 1971 he calls most of Hitler’s courtiers so corrupt that they would make Al Capone look like a benign philanthropist. Speer says Goering was the most corrupt, looting museums on a grand scale, although Fat Hermann had great personal charm and a keen intellect “he could be a most engaging bandit.” Speer calls Martin Bormann “the most coarse and brutal and ruthless member of the Nazi hierarchy–and believe me, that took some doing. Personally, he was violent and crude, without any culture or refinement. By nature, he was an underling, but he was also a bully and treated his subordinates like animals, with sadistic contempt for their sensibilities. He was either at your feet or at your throat, the worst type of peasant with the worst type of peasant cunning.” Speer described Goebbels as capable and intelligent, dedicated worker, well organized and systematic thinker with a gift for analyzing problems and finding solutions. He towered over the mental pygmies in Hitler’s entourage, being one of the few with a university education. Bit of a martinet and waspish tongue but the two got along. Goebbels was mid-pack in corruption and more interested in blackmailing girls into his bed.
