Thanks, but not all that much courage, since I’d read accounts of others who had rated the insertion as pretty mild pain, and the fluid infusion (which I knew I could call off immediately) as the only severe one.
The pain from childbirth can be variable. I used to work with a woman who had been a professional dancer when she had her son, and she used to whine about how she “missed out” on the pain of childbirth.
Yeah, I get migraines, and I’ve often thought I’d be happy if someone just decapitated me.
Back when I got home from hip surgery I hurt bad, although not the worst. carrps, you can do what I did and get my dog to cuddle with me in bed.
Sadly, we lost our Max this last March, and we’ve decided against getting another one. I miss him (and all his furry predecessors). Sometimes, I wish there was a rent-a-dog service!
Oh I wish I remembered, or knew, that. Is that why I got the pictures? I do have them all on the wall, with the magazine cover one right at eye level, to be the easiest to see. So sorry.
Anal Fissure. Went to a protocolgist who I thought was a male (I am). It was a female with a male sounding name. She made the diagnosis, and had one herself in the past, as well as three children. She told me she’d rather have another kid than experience that again. I’ve never been so miserable - could not sit, can’t stand (all the fluid pressure/gravity), hurts like hell (especially after going to the bathroom, for hours), and is relentless (once the sphincter muscle is exposed, it spasms constantly, making the wound worse). Most need surgery - mine took 8 weeks to heal on its own and I don’t recall crying from pain alone since I was a kid. Caused by a c-diff infection which had me going to the bathroom around the clock.
Oh man, there are some human conditions I had never been aware of, and I wish this was still one of them.
It’s close between a kidney stone and a back spasm (tip: next time a microwave oven says that it takes two people to install, believe it), especially as both triggered testicular pain as well. At least with the back, I could use CVS generic-brand Icy Hot.
Yikes, I had c-diff last year, but I never developed an anal fissure. I will be more careful about taking antibiotics, which caused my c-diff.
I have a friend who had a strangulated hemorrhoid and he says it’s the worst pain of his life. Butt stuff is serious business.
Kidney stones! And I’ve read that some women have reported that their stones far outstripped their childbirth experience.

ISTM that pain without a purpose is probably harder to bear than pain with a purpose. And I really can’t think of anything other than childbirth where the pain leads to something good!
My Mom said that childbirth paled in comparison to her menstrual cramps. And I was breech. We have a generations-long history in my family of dysmenorrhea (painful periods), endometriosis and PMDD (a serious psychiatric disorder related to hormonal cycles.) After years of begging, my Mom finally told the doctor if he didn’t cut her uterus out, she would kill herself. Then he was amazed at how bad her endometriosis was when he cut her open. Ya think? My Aunt is having hers out in February. She did fine until she hit menopause and they took her off birth control. Currently mine is controlled with birth control. So this is probably my future. My Aunt is trying to convince me to get it done now, so I don’t have to live through the hell of life without birth control, but I really don’t have any room in my schedule for major surgery right now, and I’ve been trying to convince doctors to give me a hysterectomy for years anyways, and I doubt 40 is the magic age.
Since endometriosis is basically hemorrhaging internally, yeah, it hurts a lot. Yet it takes on average 9 years to properly diagnose because of resistance in the medical community. Turns out people just have a real hard time taking women seriously.
Having my teeth drilled. Without novacaine.
I hear ya. I had a dentist doing a root canal drill past the Novocain into live pulp.
Then he insisted on putting the needle into the pulp to inject more Novocain so he could finish.
The stuff of nightmares. This thread is the stuff of nightmares.
Yeah, there’s some bad stuff in here, but when I was having trouble walking because my back was spasming, this thread helped.
Also helps me keep a cryogenically cauterized finger tip in perspective.
just for context:
.
thats NIGHTMARE territory, right there … and could easily surpass the “dentist-scene” in Marathon man !!!
I have a tattoo. It’s not at all in contention for worst pain, but it was significantly painful. I was with a group of friends who were all getting them, and we agreed that it felt like being cut with a knife, repeatedly.
I remember being fascinated at the time, because I had a weird feeling in my spine (my tattoo is on my deltoid). It was almost like a buzzing sensation, and made me feel sort of antsy. I concluded at the time that my spine was trying to send the signal to my shoulder to jerk away from the being-cut-with-a-knife sensation. But my brain was overriding that signal, saying instead, stay very still, you don’t want to mess it up…
Anyway, your post reminded me of that.
I’ve had many surgeries. 7 facial surgeries for reconstruction. Rhinoplasty was nasty pain.
Kidneys removed. (Subsequent piece of rib removed)
Holes drilled in my head.
My stomach valve fixed.
My thumb had to have a skin graft.
The worst was the dental surgery to implant teeth. The after surgery pain was just horrific.
Rehab after my kidney surgeries was pretty awful too. I had been pretty ill for awhile beforehand.
I jumped right up after 2 caesarians. I was way younger and stronger.
I’ve spent dozens of hours being tattooed. For me the discomfort varied significantly with the location. The thigh is no big deal, while the underside of the wrist and the arm near the armpit were more painful.
