Well you and I must be recieving different news coverage and your’s may be true but just ponder what America looks like to outsiders now. I didn’t make up my perception.
We have constant coverage of people screaming about lack of food, about dead bodies in the streets and about the need to escape. We have had a strange lack of GW on the News.
I have been hard on the looters here before - but i am increasingly convinced that those bastards are the only people in this country who know what they are doing.
I do wonder how this affair will affect race relations in the future.
From watching the news, it does appear some blacks are living up to some stereotypes. We have a city in crisis, and rather than pull together and make the best of a situation, you have looting within 24 hours of the disaster. You have virtual warzones in the streets (where cops are refusing to go), rapes, murders, and destruction in the shelters (meant to help the people), shooting at rescue workers (which I hope turns out to be an urban legend).
When I was watching it with some friends visiting from the Philippines, they were asking me why only the blacks were causing problems, and not trying to help the situation. Quite blunt: didn’t even bother with the “I don’t mean to sound racist” disclaimer. If people from outside the country who aren’t exposed to our stereotypes observed this, what about others?

Agreed - the news reports here aren’t attempting to create their own ‘total casualties’ stuff, because they know it’s spurious. They’re doing individial stories, from all along the coast. And to be honest, that’s where the reportage should be - telling us how people are actually dealling with the situation.

Rape has nothing to do with stealling televisions. Of course it is justified to use deadly force to stop rape. No, it is still not ok to shoot people for stealing televisions.
