Would a water fountain for my cats be a wise choice for me?

Momo, likes his water in pristine condition. Otherwise he’ll go with out.

His brother Sam however, is a different story. Instead of drinking water like a normal cat, he dips his paw in the water, and then laps it up off his paw. The problem with this being, all the debris from his paw (mostly cat litter) ends up in the bowl. Making it unpalatable for Momo.
So I’m wondering, if I get a water fountain for them, is the aforementioned debris going to gum up the works of the fountain?
Thanks. I’m also open to other suggestions that may help me with my situation.

We’ve had one for about four years. Ceramic recirculating with a carbon filter. We live in Arizona, dry and warm. The fountain does get gunky and mossy. We clean it out really well about every two weeks.

The cat seems to like it. We load it with ice cubes when he needs more added.

You sound like a perfect candidate for a cat fountain! I have this one.

It is inexpensive, a piece of cake to assemble, easy to clean, and my cats love it. I’m not sure how long the filters are supposed to last, but after several months I’m still using the first filter, and it comes with three spares.

The instructions recommend cleaning it every two weeks, a schedule I’ve more or less adhered to although I don’t sweat it if I go 16 or 18 days instead of 14, since it never seems particularly dirty when I clean it (although I rinse a few bits of dirt/cat hair off the filter). If your cats muck it up, you could probably clean it every week without much of a hassle.

Even though it looks like a cheap contraption, it seems pretty sturdy. The instructions say “don’t run the pump dry” as if that would kill the motor. But when I hadn’t had the fountain long and the kitten still found it a novelty, he knocked it over one night. I didn’t discover until the morning that the pump had been plugged in out of water. It wasn’t humming and I thought, “Oh well, that’s the end of that” but when I re-assembled the thing, filled it with water and plugged it in again, lo and behold it worked just fine.

So I am a fan. I wish everything I bought was such a great combination of inexpensive, easy to use, effective, and well made.

I’m sorry but what does this mean? Your cat would literally die of dehydration unless his water is in pristine condition?

More likely, if it’s not, he’ll make such a nuisance of himself that the humans living with him just wish that he would die.

How can a pet cat make be that much of a nuisance?

I grew up with at least 4 cats at all times. They were never a nuisance. I honestly don’t understand that.

I did in fact kill one of those motors by accidentally letting the pump run dry.
