Would I Enjoy "The Dark Tower" More If I Read the Rest of King's Works? (Spoilers)

My short answer is yes.

My long answer is yes, but not so much more that you actually need to go and do it, especially if you’re not enjoying the journey at this point. I’m a King fan and I liked the Dark Tower fine, but more because I enjoy his writing than because it was really good.

I think most of us would recommend The Stand, and I have a soft spot for The Shining as well. You would still like it even it you saw the Kubrick movie. It is not the same.

devilsknew and pool, I’m in there with you.

Maybe I’ll get around to the DT one of these days - I’ve read pretty much all of his other stuff.

But some of it is truly dreadful - Desperation and The Regulators, with, for me, The Dead Zone running them pretty close - so it might just not be worth the investment of time for the return you’re going to get.

King’s writing does vary wildly, and I’ve got no idea about the quality of the writing in the DT. But out of his other books, if you put Cell up againt The Shining - no comparison.

Perhaps you’re just not cut out to be a King fan, but I’d recommend some of the older ones - The Shining, The Stand, Misery - where the writing and characterization are spot on.

psst, Unauthorized Cinnamon, you’re not alone. I liked Rose Madder too.*
