In the song “Fred” from the album Exordium and Terminus by Zager and Evans, there is the following lyric:
“When he reached the age of nine, he killed a frog with a kitchen knife
Broke the wing of a noble bird, with a jagged rock that his slingshot hurled;
When he reached the age of ten, he stole his neighbor’s Guinea hen
Wrapped its beak in masking tape, it starved to death in 13 days”
Rockin’ lyrics, huh? Leaving aside the issue of the terrible rhymes, I want to know if this is true or not. Would a Guinea hen really starve to death in 13 days? I would assume it would die much quicker than that. I’d think it would suffocate first, and if it was somehow able to breathe through the masking tape, I would think it would die of thirst before starvation. Does anyone know the facts behind this?
Thanks, Zager and Evans.
