If that’s where she has them, David’s been doing it wrong for the last couple of years…
Crocodiles And Boulevards, I understand exactly what you are trying to say.
That’s why I’m so adamently opposed to it.
Gisele is not a great example though, her height is listed as 5’10" and her weight on according to Wikipedia is 130 pounds giving her a BMI of 18.7. She’s close to the underweight line, but still at a healthy BMI. (Other reports say she put on about 15 pounds last year, so I don’t know if the 130 is before or after that.)
Kate Moss is a better example, she is listed as 5’6" and 107 pounds giving her a BMI of 17.3, which would be under the 18.5 line that is considered underweight.

Why hasn’t any one called you on this?! Cite?
I am 6’0 and weigh 130 lbs. At that weight and height my BMI is under 18. Regardless, this is how I came and no matter what I do, I cannot gain weight. I eat what I want, when I want, in whatever quantity I want, and I still do not gain weight. I can spend an entire winter doing nothing but working, watching tv, and drinking beer, AND NOT GAIN WEIGHT. Are you saying there are not plenty of models with similar bodies? Are you saying that there is no way of maintaining a low body weight in a healthy fashion?
Obviously, there are models who are anorexic - like there are in any profession. By demanding models reach some arbitrary weight to height ratio you are effectively telling people like myself - if I was a model - we are out of a job. (I honestly cannot gain weight. No, it is not a medical condition, and yes, my girlfriend is terribly envious of my metabolism.)
We want to regulate the modeling industry, ok, fine, but where are the laws regulating gymnastics? Watch the Olympics this summer, you tell me those girls are healthy with their weight. What about wrestling? How many teenage boys and girls starve themselves to maintain their weight category? Do we give these professions a pass because they’re athletic? What about Hollywood? Where are the laws regulating celebrities? I see drug addicted, under-weight, alcoholics in nearly every movie I watch. Why isn’t Nicole Richie banned from media coverage?!
Can people seriously support a law which would demand that an individual, who is naturally skinny and attractive, be banned from working?
In real life Kate Moss doesn’t look “terribly ill” skinny - she’s thin but she’s on a small frame and she carries it well.
I was just going to ask if those figures were correct, as my measurements would be pretty close to hers (an inch taller and a few pounds heavier) and there’s no way I look as skinny as she does.

I didn’t say she looked terribly ill, just that she was an example of a model who is under the ‘underweight’ line of the BMI chart. The airbrushing that is done to photos make them look a good bit smaller than they really are.

You are 20 pounds heavier than the models being told they are too skinny. That’s almost 20%, a huge percentage for base weight. You cannot compare yourself to them.
The problem for models is that they are normally “discovered” when very young and not yet fully developed. To maintain their position in the industry, they have to artificially stay at that undeveloped state even after their bodies want to develop. That’s where the problems come in. People keep stating in this thread that some people are naturally skinny and stop there. Of course some people are naturally skinny. That’s still not at all the same thing as staying at model weight when your body is growing. Twiggy, to give a supposed counterexample mentioned earlier, got out of modeling when she was 20 and her body no longer looks at all the same as it did then. The extremes of fashion modeling require stalling body growth at an artificial childlike look, not a natural one for adults.

There are laws which regulate height and weight for police, for fire fighters, for army personnel, for all sorts of groups. I keep asking why modeling should be the one industry that is exempt from regulation. The answer I keep getting is, just because. Doesn’t work for me.
I might have a problem with the particular wording of a particular law, if one existed. But none do, which make it hard for me to properly judge them. I’m making a general case that the modeling profession should not be a protected exception to the general kind of law that everybody else has to live by. I’m genuinely puzzled that people can object to that.

This is also true of gymnastics.

That’s what I said. The OP asked if Gisele Bundchen should be considered to be “at a state of near starvation”. I said that I don’t think so, but I that think there are supermodels who do fit that description. Like, say, Kate Moss

Professional ballet dancers as well. They tend to have very high rates of eating disorders to maintain their ‘body line’.

Sorry, I have no idea why I took your post the way I did. Reading for comprehension and all that good stuff.

That’s okay, it’s easy to get distracted with naked pictures of supermodels named Gisele on the table
