Up until 10 July, 2003, everyone thought that Harry Truman was one of the Greatest Presidents since sliced bread. On that day, the National Archives released the text of a journal he kept, which had been only accidently discovered. In it, he wrote using frank language that he and many others of his generaltion would have used in their private lives. Not surprising. Fortunately, most people with any sense of diplomacy don’t allow themselves to say these things in public. Does that make them a hypocrite? Don’t know.
But, at least he didn’t go around saying things like that in public. At the time, 1947 or so, the averge Americal/European, would have said the same or worse. My Dad did. I heard it every day, even into the 1970s-80s.
