I am not sure if this is the truth or a stretch of the truth. Someone that I know is a security guard at a school and he said that when the president came to visit the school the secret service gave him a gun so he could help them protect the president.
I don’t doubt him that as a Security Guard he would have a roll in protecting the president if he was in his “guard territory” but I’m thinking it would be a small part because of all the Police and Secret Service that would be there in the first place.
Would that ever happen, the Secret Service arming a Security Guard?
What would be this guy’s roll as a Security Guard in protecting the President with so much other protection around?
I’m not bashing Security Guards but I think this story was being exaggerated.
Thanks .
Obviously no one who wasn’t there could know for sure. But many jurisdictions regulate and license unarmed and armed security guards by different standards, and require background checks and formal training for armed guards. It would be as illegal for an unlicensed security guard to carry a gun as for any other unlicensed citizen. And it’s hard to believe that the Secret Service or the police would hand a gun to a stranger who might not know how to use it and might not be trustworthy, apart from all the other considerations. Is it possible that your pal was pulling your leg? If he’s telling the truth it sounds a little scary.
I think your assumption is correct. If they needed that particular area secure, I think they can handle it just fine thank you very much. My brother is an actual police officer and when George Bush came into their jurisdiction, the police got into minor skirmish over where they could be with their police firearms. The Secret Service is very, very paranoid because that is their job and they don’t really like outsiders with guns anywhere near the president.
Its hard enough getting close to the President at scheduled stops. Arming strangers doesn’t seem like part of a robust security plan.
Obviously no one who wasn’t there could know for sure.

WRONG. I wasn’t there, but I still know for sure that his story is total bullshit.
Even what few local police officers are used in security details for presidential visits, all get thoroughly checked by the Secret Service. They don’t just assume that a person is ok because he is a cop.
If this guy is normally unarmed, there is no freaking way in hell that the Secret Service would just give him a gun. Think common sense, liability for starters!!
And I’ll go as far to say that if he was normally armed in the performance of his duties, that the Secret Service would ask all campus security to stay the hell away from their secure area and where the president would be. Or maybe even disarm them. But they wouldn’t let them be in the area with guns without a thorough check.
I hate people like this. I hope this someone you know is not a friend of yours. If he is, bitch slap him for me!!
This has been attempted with car stereos in order to cancle out the road noise with limited sucess. It seems that you can create a zone that does cancle out the noise but it is limited in spacial area and any movement of the head outside of this area creates a disturbing effect. The military is very interested in this technology for tank and helicopter crews but it is still in the experimental stages.
Sorry, hit wrong thread above. :smack:
The Secert survice dosn’t even trust the Chilien government. Why would it trust someone here that wasn’t part of a bonifide police agency. Unless of course they felt that only Shack or Austin Powers could do the job.
To further this, I participated in a presidential visit with Clinton a few years back. (Specifically, I “piped” him on and off a Coast Guard cutter through rows of sideboys) Anyone who was going to get remotely close to the president was subjected to backround checks days in advance.
Also, one point of disagreement between the USCG and USSS, was the status of the armory keys of all the cutters on the base. That is to say, the USSS didn’t want cutter crews access to their own weapons. ON THE BASE. In the end, that did not happen, but it goes to show the lengths that the SS will go to satisfy their concerns.
So I’d say the story is BS.
This is exactly the stories I’ve heard from so many people. Which is what leads me to the conclusion that if he was at a Campus with “armed security”, the security would either be disarmed, or told to stay out of a certain perimeter (even though the perimeter was well within their normal patrol area) or probably even BOTH.
I’ve known two officers involved with a vist. One was in the procession, stopping traffic and such. The other had some other kind of indirect security role. Both were subjected to additional background, job performance/complaints and (maybe most importantly) current credit reports. There’s big money in assasinations, I’m sure!
The claim is bullshit. No way does an otherwise unarmed guard get a gun from, of all places, the Secret Service.
When Bush was campaigning he came to where I was working. The S.S. did backgrounds on all of us, wether we were working or not, including the weapons we were carrying and their serial #. I had to fill out a piece of paper (it was baby blue colored) with some info. NONE of us were going to be anywhere near where he was going to be anyway.
Can’t be sure but I go along with the others. I suspect that the Secret Service doesn’t want anyone with a gun, other than Secret Service, within miles of the President.
Here is an extract from the Recordings of the Official Enquiry into the Assassination of the President (day 2).
Committee Counsel:
Please identify yourself for the record.
Witness:
My name is Homer Simpson. I am a senior member of the Secret Service and, because of my local knowledge, had overall responsibility for protecting the President on his visit to Springfield.
Counsel:
Please summarise the events of the day.
Witness:
Well we arrived at 08.58. at the School. The President left the car and was introduced to Principal Skinner.
We entered the premises at 08.59 and were greeted by the groundskeeper, Mr. Willie. It was at this point that the President was shot.
Counsel:
By whom?
Witness:
The groundskeeper.
Counsel:
Did you find where he obtained his weapon?
Witness:
Yes.
Counsel:
Please don’t prevaricate. How did this man get a deadly weapon within feet of the President?!
Witness:
Doh!
I gave it to him the day before.
