Would you be friends with your family?

My remaining family consists of five cousins, all of whom I am on good terms with, but I have little in common with them. I do love them, but I can’t say we would be friends.

My brother-in-law is the man. I can’t say enough about him. He’s great. His dad is great too.

If I didn’t already know my sister, no. We get along great and are very close, but are very different and have very different worldviews. I can’t imagine if we’d met on the street somehow that we’d be friends.

As for the rest of my family, oh hell no. That’s why I live 1,000 miles away!

My two brothers are the closest friends I have aside from my wife. One was on my softball team for years, and I played in bands with the other for decades. My daughter and I could be friends. We enjoy a lot of the same books, music and food.

It’s really only my brothers who pass the test, though. If I had run into them through softball and music without being related to them, they would have become close friends.

Assuming I knew they existed (I live in different states from my brother & sister, and a different continent from my parents), absolutely. I would probably find the things I find annoying about my dad much less so if he weren’t my dad.
