I’d keep it to myself. I’ll live forever and if I ever get bored I can kill myself. The real problem will be that I’ll have to move every now and then lest some government agency discover that I’m an immortal and capture me for study.
I’m with fluiddruid - not just yes but hell, yes. Sure there would be issues with respect to overpopulation that would have to be dealt with, but compared to ending one of the (if not THE) major sources of human misery, they’re pretty damn minor. Even if we end up with a system where everyone goes into a Logan’s Run carousel thingy at age 125, that still beats the pants off of the current situation.
Bonus question: if you were going to distribute the pill, would you publicly take credit for it? Bonus: most loved human being EVAR. Penalty: Biggest target for lunatic-fringe psycho assassins EVAR.
Nor did I accuse you of such; it was a separate analogy.
But your point seems inconsistent to me. If you sell the pill, and/or put provisos on its use, then some people are going to get diseases and die, that it was in your power to prevent.
I don’t see how that can be morally fine, while withholding the pill completely is “mass murder”.
I’m not saying the pill should be free for all; just that I think your position is incoherent.
Sorry, been busy.
Say the cost to make the pill was a million dollars. Some people will be able to afford it, others won’t. Because everyone can’t afford it, we shouldn’t allow those who can to use it? How about cancer treatment right now? Should doctors work for free?
I’d make the pill available based upon economic conditions: Would it be right to charge two million and give one to someone who couldn’t afford it otherwise? How would I make that choice? Hopefully, it would be pennies to make and not much of an issue.
I’d also make it available upon other conditions: 1) Proof of sterility: The breeders have their immortality through their kids, 2) Renunciation of their god on tape. The latter shouldn’t be an issue because those who truly believe won’t want the pill anyways as it would delay them meeting their god.
So, everyone has access to the pill under some minor* conditions. All together different than withholding completely.
*I’m sure some can make the case that they are major conditions. They would be wrong.
