Would you like your Receipt?

I’ve noticed lately that places like Whole Foods, and other green minded organizations have been asking me if I want my receipt or not after a transaction. I am guessing this is to save some paper - I doubt it will save any trees.

Most often I say, no. I don’t need it unless it is a business expense, and I also certainly don’t need or care about the ten-mile long grocery receipt either…but most grocers like King Soopers, Safeway, Publics etc…still hand out the mile long receipt.

How about you?

I always decline or immediately discard; I have no business expenses.

I take the grocery receipt because I often look at it to see what I spent on things, and because there’s a coupon for money off gas on it.

Other receipts though, for gas or a soda, or at a restaurant I don’t want, and I don’t want one for the ATM.

I use my debit card for nearly all of my purchases, and I always take my receipt and put it in my wallet so that I can update my checking account balance in Quicken at the end of the day (I don’t like to rely on online banking for my balance, because some charges don’t appear for days). I don’t ask for/keep my receipt if I pay cash, and the rare times I use my credit card for something I also don’t need a receipt.

No, and even if I do take it I’m tossing it in the trash on my way out.

I am one of those (increasingly less, but still) paranoid people who want to shred anything that has my name and (even partial) credit/debit card number on it. I have been in some places that ask if you want to your receipt, and when you say no, they’ll just crumple it up and throw it in the trash. That makes me twitch.

So unless I know that the receipt will never print out if I don’t ask for it (say, at a gas station pump or something like that), I’ll take the receipt and discard it on my own.

I always ask for a receipt. Apart from anything else, it allows me to confirm that I’ve been billed correctly.

Recently they’ve been asking me this at Blockbuster and when I say no, they throw it in the trash. It does not appear any paper is being saved.

Receipt please…

Retail store or market:
I will discard once I confirm that the products I purchased do not need to be returned.

Pay at Pump Gas Station
Happens rarely, but I have had the in-store cashier try to charge me although I have paid at the pump. Luckily, I was able to confirm with the pump produced receipt.

We are obsessive about keeping every receipt because we track all of our spending by item. It’s a little obsessive, but it’s made a huge difference in our spending habit: much like food journaling keeps you aware of your calories, spending journaling keeps us aware of our choices and opportunity costs.

lol

It depends-- I always want a reciept when I pay for gas, although I never do anything with it but crumple it up and stick it my car someplace.

I don’t care about a receipt, generally, if I’m eating fast food.

I want a reciept at the grocery store or any place I’m spending more than twenty dollars.

What, did they come running out of their little office to chase you down the road? Where I live, there is no “pump first” option: you can’t dispense the gasoline until you’ve either paid cash inside or inserted a charge card outside.

Only for business expenses.

Side note: The friggin receipts at the supermarket are getting ridiculous. But one thing and end up with a foot and a half of receipt.

I don’t think it has anything to do with being “green”. Most places I go to these days and make small transactions at (convenience stores, coffee shops and cafes, etc.) ask if I want the receipt. It prints out either way - if I say no the only thing that happens is they throw it in the trash for me instead of me having to throw it in the trash on my way out.

This. It’s been my experience that too many people never passed basic math in school, even when today’s cash registers are so dumbed down to accommodate them.

I keep it if I used my debit card, but really don’t need it for the $1.49 coffee I just bought with cash.

Isn’t there some new health threat about register receipts? Something about BPA?

Yes, if I’ve paid electronically. Then I can check the receipt against my statement.

No, if I’m paying cash.

I’ve never been asked this except at gas stations, and I say no. I go to Whole Foods regularly and have never been asked if I want my receipt–they just hand it to me.

I’ve actually returned food I’ve bought at Publix, so I do keep my receipts for a while, but I don’t have an organized way of keeping or filing them.
