I’ve noticed lately that places like Whole Foods, and other green minded organizations have been asking me if I want my receipt or not after a transaction. I am guessing this is to save some paper - I doubt it will save any trees.
Most often I say, no. I don’t need it unless it is a business expense, and I also certainly don’t need or care about the ten-mile long grocery receipt either…but most grocers like King Soopers, Safeway, Publics etc…still hand out the mile long receipt.
I use my debit card for nearly all of my purchases, and I always take my receipt and put it in my wallet so that I can update my checking account balance in Quicken at the end of the day (I don’t like to rely on online banking for my balance, because some charges don’t appear for days). I don’t ask for/keep my receipt if I pay cash, and the rare times I use my credit card for something I also don’t need a receipt.
I am one of those (increasingly less, but still) paranoid people who want to shred anything that has my name and (even partial) credit/debit card number on it. I have been in some places that ask if you want to your receipt, and when you say no, they’ll just crumple it up and throw it in the trash. That makes me twitch.
So unless I know that the receipt will never print out if I don’t ask for it (say, at a gas station pump or something like that), I’ll take the receipt and discard it on my own.
Retail store or market:
I will discard once I confirm that the products I purchased do not need to be returned.
Pay at Pump Gas Station
Happens rarely, but I have had the in-store cashier try to charge me although I have paid at the pump. Luckily, I was able to confirm with the pump produced receipt.
We are obsessive about keeping every receipt because we track all of our spending by item. It’s a little obsessive, but it’s made a huge difference in our spending habit: much like food journaling keeps you aware of your calories, spending journaling keeps us aware of our choices and opportunity costs.
What, did they come running out of their little office to chase you down the road? Where I live, there is no “pump first” option: you can’t dispense the gasoline until you’ve either paid cash inside or inserted a charge card outside.
I don’t think it has anything to do with being “green”. Most places I go to these days and make small transactions at (convenience stores, coffee shops and cafes, etc.) ask if I want the receipt. It prints out either way - if I say no the only thing that happens is they throw it in the trash for me instead of me having to throw it in the trash on my way out.
This. It’s been my experience that too many people never passed basic math in school, even when today’s cash registers are so dumbed down to accommodate them.
I’ve never been asked this except at gas stations, and I say no. I go to Whole Foods regularly and have never been asked if I want my receipt–they just hand it to me.
I’ve actually returned food I’ve bought at Publix, so I do keep my receipts for a while, but I don’t have an organized way of keeping or filing them.
