That seems to be happening a lot recently, sir. If I recall, you were once enlisted. What happened? OTS drop your IQ or something?
A question to those who said they would register:
Would you register because you believe registration would be a good thing, or would you register for fear of the legal consequences of being caught with an unregistered firearm?
The latter, if you want to call it fear. In reality, it’s more like the “law-abiding” part of “law-abiding” citizen that we always say we are.
I absolutely do not believe that registration is a good thing, and I’ve argued against it countless times for reasons already mentioned here.
Me? Prior enlisted? No, I went ROTC out of high school, had to get a job, and work my way through college.
To answer Crafter_Man, I too would do so only to be on the ‘right side of the law’, only to avoid harassment of the legal consequences of not registering.
I don’t think registration is a good thing because you could never ensure the register is complete, or that it contains ‘perfect data’ to begin with–and even if you did your part, there’s no guarantee some glitch in the system would drop you from the register, putting the blame square back on you.
I don’t trust bureaucracies. (and yet I work in one. :smack: )
Tripler
Nope. Not one bit.
The second. I’d register because I don’t want to be fined, jailed or have my guns confiscated for not registering. I’d also do my best to get the law repealed and the registration lists destroyed. Of course, I live in MA which has defacto registration now (all transfers must either go through an FFL or be reported to the state on a FA-13 form), but I don’t like that either, and call my state rep whenever new gun legislation comes up for a vote.
One month, not a zombie yet, right?
Turns out I was a good boy after all. I just sent off the forms (and money) to register my handguns with the State of California. Having to pay forty bucks to do so reminded me of the scene in Brazil where the poor schmucks are forced to pay for their interrogations.
Also turns out my SKS is legal, because it doesn’t have a detachable magazine, so no sweat there. Longarms don’t have to be registered, just handguns.
SLK, law-abiding patriot.
Aw, why’d ya do that?
Mostly, because I may wind up having to sell them. Partly because it’s the law in the People’s Republic of Kalifornia. If for any reason I inadvertantly commit a minor firearm infraction (tragically easy to do, like being within 100 miles of condor with lead ammo in my possesion) it’s a ‘felony enhancer’. They’re draconian about guns over here, and I want to stay legal.
“Like a man may avoid jaywalking, on his way to rob a bank.”
Don’t own any guns, but if I did, I would definitely think many a times before complying with any additional registration requirements.
The current administration has strengthened by belief in the value of keeping as much private as possible. And I now believe there may be merit in significant portions of the population owning unregistered firearms.
As far as complying simply because it is a law - well, I must admit I have knowlingly exceeded the speed limit on rare occasion. Consider it civil disobedience or what-have-you, but I believe compliance with just about any law involves the personal importance you place on the activity, the likelihood of being caught, and the penalty if you are caught.
Register my guns? What guns?
Airman Doors, obeying the law is good in good times. But there are times when it behooves every free citizen to disobey immoral laws.
I’d like to see private guns banned outright. And also “militias”, those gun clubs in some states that are not under any public, voter based, civic control.
Those clubs are completely under “public, voter based, civic control.” Don’t be so sillily obtuse.
My first inclination was to say absolutely not, but on second thought sure, why not. Long before they were to ever be able to come get them when the great American Firearm Roundup would start I’d be in the hills with the rest of my gun nut friends anyway.
Being where and who I am, Cluricaun, I’ll be your ‘canary in the coal mine’ so to speak. I’ll try to get word to you when the jack booted thugs kick down the door and disarm me.
Guantanimo has Dial up, at least, right?
The Maillard reaction: Why do you hate America?
"A well regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed. "
That’s from the Constitution, the documents that created our nation (if you’re american).
Now, please make the argument that by ‘well regulated’ the founders meant ‘completely banned’.
Silenus, did you know that Militias are illegal in California? I think that happened under Reagan’s watch. Black Panthers, SLA, etc.
Yikes! I’m afraid I have to retract that statement. I swear I’ve read a prohibition against participation in ‘paramilitary organizations’ but I cannot find a cite in my ‘California Gun Owner’s Guide’. My apologies.
It is illegal to shoot a frog of any kind with a gun of any kind
Fish and game code section 6854.
Whether or not the frog is a member of a militia or paramilitary organization.
I was not aware of that.
It’s probably OK, If it’s a clear cut case of self defense.
