It’s hard to know just who my boss was (before I retired). Was it my chairman? I was certainly smarter than any of my chairmen (with, possibly, one exception). The deans? You had to be pretty dim to be a dean and neither the chairman nor dean had much that they could boss me about. There is a story of a famous professor somehow fielding a call from an irate mother who eventually asks whom she is talking to. On being told Professor E. A., she said, “I will talk to nobody lower that a dean”. To which E. A. replied, “Madam, there is nobody lower than a dean.” Or maybe the upper administration? Bunch of overpaid dimwits. One of the dimmest is now Governor General of Canada, good digs pure rubber stamp.
“It ain’t braggin’ if you can do it.” A famous dead guy once said that. ![]()
Sure, I’m smarter than my boss, but that’s not saying much. Everybody around here thinks he’s as dumb as a bag of hammers.
I said that I was probably equal to my boss, but am in exactly the same situation. I’m going to have to start using that line in meetings.
I’m definitely smarter than my boss, but I have about 1/16th the drive she does.
We had a youngish, obnoxious college-boy boss from hell no one could stand when I worked in a big office - but I have to say, he WAS smarter than the rest of us. There was a big cabinet that had to be moved, full of wide 2" high drawers holding big flat maps. All able bodied men were assembled to move this thing (the call went out on each floor - ‘bodies - we need bodies down here’). During the discussion of how just to move that big heavy thing, the boss went whipping by, stopped in his tracks, said “why don’t you just take out the drawers first and then move it?” and sailed out of the room…There was a silence, and someone said “and that, ladies and gentlemen, is why HE is where he is in this company, and why WE are where we are.”
When I read something about smart/dumb bosses, I always think of the King of The Hill episode where Bobby Hill was working for a a lethargic dunce, but his dad kept saying, 'always give 110% Bobby, always give 110%."
