Would you sign Barry Bonds?

I would not be surprised if Hank Steinbrenner signed him. At all. And I’m a Yankees fan.

Speaking as a Yankees fan who thinks Barry Bonds is an utter asshole with no redeeming human qualities…

Yeah, I’d probably sign him. I wouldn’t pay him top dollar by any means, but if he misses baseball and desperately wants another crack at a World Series ring, I don’t see how it could hurt to have him on the roster.

I mean, there are LOTS of assholes in Major League Baseball. There just aren’t many guys who can hit like Barry.

And you CAN’T tell me he wouldn’t be more productive than the steroid abuser the Yankees ALREADY have at DH.

He used to play for my team (The Pittsburgh Pirates).
He was not missed, and honestly, the Pirates suck too bad for even Bonds in his prime to do much good.

On the other hand, if he played here, I could throw rotten fruit at him…

ok, I’m in.

I am not sure it is collusion. It is just a lot of owners with the same viewpoint. He is not worth the aggravation. I would sign him for a team that has sagging attendance. But his attitude in the clubhouse would change team chemistry, a risk to a contender.

The Mets should sign him. They already committed to one ancient, injury-prone Left Fielder who’s a defensive liability (Moises Alou). Bonds, in fact, has been a better defended (and obviously a better hitter) than Alou the past few years. Is it at all possible that Bonds could play a non-catastrophic 1B?

Because the only thing the Mets have going for them is clubhouse unity, and they’re starting to turn things around.

See the rest of my posts. Why throw good money after bad?

If the only thing they have going for them is clubhouse unity, their record should be 0-84.

History is full of examples of teams that won championships without any of this “Clubhouse unity.” Professional ballplayers will go out and play ball, and I just don’t believe a team will fall apart and stop playing to their abilities because Lucifer Bonds is around.

I think it was Johnny Blanchard, the Yankees old catcher in the early Sixties, who said “Fans and the media always look at a team in disarray, a team that’s losing, that’s squabbling and pointing fingers, and they ask ‘Why don’t they pull together? If they’d just pull together, they’d win!’ But they’ve got it backwards. If the team would just win, they’d pull together.”

When the Yankees were winning, even the biggest assholes on the team loved each other. I have little doubt that even the most anti-Barry Mets and Met fans would start making excuses for the guy if he hit a few walkoff homers.

I can’t believe that no team would take a rider and pay him the league minimum. I can’t imagine any clubhouse cancer would be mitigated by the offensive production he brings to your team. Beyond, that a losing team could sign him and draw fans. Before the steroids people loved to come to the ball park and boo him. (The fans in the outfield at the Vet always had inning after inning of boos for him every came out.) And, surprisingly, he still has people who like and support him, they would come out to see him as well.

I realize he is old, and his presence will put a public face on the steroid issue every game. And all of his other negatives. But, in spite of these things, I am still surprised that no team has taken him up on this salary offer. I can see refusing to pay him millions, but not this offer of taking the pro rated minimum.

The Mets are playing .500 ball since firing the coaches and manager; that’s not “turning things around,” that’s treading water.

Barry Bonds is really, really good at baseball. He could likely give the Mets an additional two or three wins over the remainder of the season, which could very easily be the difference between making the postseason and staying home. And if it doesn’t work out – either because age has finally caught up with him or because his evil nature causes Jose Reyes to forget how to hit curveballs – the Mets can just ask him to leave, having invested little more than the league minimum salary.

No. Never. Bonds must be shunned like the pariah he is, never to darken a clubhouse door again. Fuck him, and the steroid-bus he rode in on.

Note that I didn’t say I’d approve or welcome Mr. Bonds. I said I wouldn’t be surprised if Hank signed him.

I am not pleased with how Hank handles things.

Well, the Yankees are going to have a lying, cheating steroid-using DH whether they sign Barry or not, right?

The only difference between Giambi and Bonds (well, apart from the fact that Bonds was always a helluva lot better) is that Giambi shed a bunch of crocodile tears and said he was sorry for something or other, though he wouldn’t say exactly what he was sorry for or even acknowledge clearly that he’d done anything he needed to be sorry for.

Bonds is a prick and a scumbag, but I can almost respect a defiant liar more than a phony penitent.

Come on, silenus , we’re all friends here–no need to beat around the bush. If you’ve got an opinion, just come out and say it!

Sure, I’d sign him up to be the poster boy for a sweeping anti-doping campaign in major American sports. If he ever confessed and expressed remorse for his cheating, that is.
