The offseason baseball thread

For oddities, news, gripes, rumors, and general bs (baseball stuff).
Joel Zumaya of the Tigers may be out until midseason after having surgery on his throwing shoulder yesterday. How did he get hurt? Moving personal effects during the California wildfires.

What do people think of the Yankees signing Joe Girardi?

If Joe Torre goes to the Dodgers, will any of the Yankee FAs follow? I don’t follow the Dodgers, so I don’t know what positions they need to fill.

Will the Twins sign Santana to an extension? Will the Indians sign Sabathia (the GM said they would find a way)? Other FAs you’re following?

Will the Mitchell report name names? What will be the fallout if they do? What should they do?

Torre is a done deal for us. Now they’re just working out the details as to how many of his assistants are going to be coming with him. As for free agents…what we need is a left side of the infield that can hit. And a center fielder with an arm. So, if we shift Pierre from center to left, move Kemp from right to center, dump Garciaparra, Gonzalez, Schmidt, and Wolfe, give Martin and Loney substantial raises, and triple the price of parking, we might be able to sign A-Rod.

You happy about Torre? I think he’d be a good fit for a veteran team, but I don’t know enough about the Dodgers.

Over? It’s not over yet. We got another two weeks to go with the Arizona Fall League.

Six bucks a ticket, too, unless you’re an old fart like me. Then it’s five.

I’m happy with Torre. I hope it’s true that Grady Little considered resigning before we sought out Torre, though.

silenus, I know we need a third baseman, but I just can’t see us signing A-Rod. Too much money to bank on a single hope. Maybe we can get Adrian Beltre back.

I am very happy with Girardi, I wanted Torre out after last season and either Girardi or Pinella to take over. Joe G is a good fit for the Yanks. He has the respect of Jeter, Posada, Pettitte and Mo already. He is a very smart field manager and the major stress of the Yankee job is apparently no longer running the business.

Pettitte said today he will either return to the Yanks or Retire.

Rivera is probably coming, but at a higher premium than if the Yanks had given him the 2 year extension he wanted in spring training.

Abreu’s option will either be taken tomorrow or not. As A-Rod is already gone, I think they should take the option. Our other easy option would appear to be to play Matsui (little arm) or Duncan(questionable defense) in Right.

Posada might really be gone, that would be depressing and he is not replaceable. They need to overpay to keep him if that is what is required.

Obviously the Yanks are now shopping for a third baseman. I hear they are already in talks with the White Sox for Joe Crede. Apparently they are happy with the Rookie coming up.

Jim

Why would you call it overpaying him if they need him and he’s not replaceable?

He is a 35 year old catcher with extra value to the Yanks. I think the Yanks can and should pay him more than any other team. I think I am talking about a level that would be considered an overpayment.

Jim

Quick question: When do they announce the regular-season awards (MVPs, Cy Youngs, etc.)? I don’t recall it being this late in the year.

Nothing used to be quite this late in the year. If the Series had gone to 7 games, it would have lasted into November. Crazy.

Anyway, all I’m finding are that the awards are given between November 12 and 20. Most years I have a better idea than that. Sorry.

2007 BBWAA Awards
Date Award
Mon., Nov. 12 AL Rookie of the Year & NL Rookie of the Year
Tues., Nov. 13 AL Cy Young
Wed., Nov. 14 AL Manager of the Year & NL Manager of the Year
Thurs., Nov. 15 NL Cy Young
Mon., Nov. 19 AL MVP
Tues., Nov. 20 NL MVP

Anyone want to take a shot at predicting where A-Rod actually ends up? Bonus points for guessing the value of his contract.

Don’t we have another thread for that?

I still lean towards the Angels. I think it makes the most sense. I would guess 7-8 years at $28.5m per overall.

I hope it is hat in hand, back to the Yanks for 8 years total at $25m per.

Jim

Well sure, if you’re actually going to pay attention to stuff like that. :o

He declined his option with the Yankees today. I don’t suppose that’s a definite no, but it seems to be a definite lean, doesn’t it?

That made be really sad but this gives me hope:
“If Andy decides to play, I am confident we can reach an agreement with the Yankees within 24 hours. The only options, as Andy has stated, are the Yankees or retirement. He appreciates the Yankees’ willingness to give him the time he feels he needs. I do not expect him to make a decision for quite some time.”

Jim

Anybody else watch Joe Torre’s press conference today? I’m curious about what any Yankee fans here thought of what he had to say. It was the first time I’d ever paid attention to him speaking, and I’m thinking he’s going to be a positive force in the clubhouse for us. And now that he’s confirmed Mattingly and Bowa are going to be on his staff, it’s one less mystery to worry about.

Good luck, I think he is a better manager than Grady, so it should work out well.

I’ll miss Bowa, he was a damn good third base coach.

Jim

Hm. This stands to be a pretty interesting offseason, I think. As much as I’m getting tired of talking about him, it sort of seems like Alex Rodriguez is the key to the whole kit and caboodle. Where he ends up will inform where Mike Lowell goes, obviously, as well as who is in a financial position to pursue Torii Hunter and Andruw Jones.

I know the Red Sox fans don’t want to hear this, but I’ll be pretty surprised if the Red Sox don’t make a play for A-Rod. Theo Epstein, whatever you think of him, is a stat-head; he’s not a mystic or a sentimentalist, and he’ll judge Rodriguez versus Lowell on the basis of their measurable contributions to their respective teams. He has to know that going from the one to the other would be a huge upgrade for his team. It would be expensive, but aside from Lowell’s contract, he’s also freed of Schilling’s $13 million, and Eric Gagne’s near $10 million. Add those three together, and he could put A-Rod at third in Boston for a net increase in payroll that’s fairly managable. And by so doing, he’d basically lock up the AL East for 2008, at least.

If it’s not Boston, it has to be the Angels.

After that, Lowell signs with either the Red Sox or the Yankees, depending.

Next up are Hunter and Jones. I’m curious whether the Rockies will make a play for either one of those players, actually. They can’t afford to stand pat - with the same roster, they’re more likely to play worse next year than better - and adding a centerfielder with good range and decent-to-good power would be a great upgrade. My guess is that at least one of those guys ends up in Dodgerland.

As for my team, the Mets… I don’t think they’re going to do much, unfortunately. I really like and respect Omar Minaya, but I think he’s got a bad read on his present team. I think Met management really believes that they have a championship core, that the end of last season was an abberation, that they can go into 2008 with essentially the same players and be fine. I disagree - Met starting pitching almost certainly won’t be better than it was last year without an upgrade, and could very well be worse - and I’d love to see them make a play for A-Rod or do something equally radical, but I think we’re going to see them sign a middle-of-the-road outfielder, a third starter, and two middle relievers and call it an offseason.

You want him for 3rd or short? Can he even play short any longer if he tried? I’d bet he could.
