But, what if there comes a day when there is no “tyranny” to fight about?
Right now frankly, their are better equal rights than ever before. Nobody is being made to sit in the back of a bus or use a seperate water fountain. But to listen to these people talk its still on.
Also this is how many people make their money.
Because your WASTING their time.
Ok, tell me. Lets say your applying for a computer job at Microsoft. Will they ask you questions about Rosa Parks or Malcolm X? Will wearing a pink hat and marching with a goofy sign help you get a job at … well just about anywhere???
Who is hiding anything? Its a part of history.
Yes, we can learn, then we can move on.
Focusing on “social justice” issues is basically some angry person saying “your ancestors did so and so to my ancestors so therefore, I should get something in return”. It also creates a massive culture of division among the students. Look at how colleges now ask that their be “persons of color” only areas.
This is the right-wing radio fantasy-version of what “social justice” means, but it’s not reality. Don’t just take their word for it, any more than you should take the word of folks who hate Christianity about what Christianity really means. There are tons of pro-social-justice folks here… why not ask us what it really means?
Imagine getting some leftist crap and telling the teacher you thought it was so?
Do you REALLY think all public school teachers can be open minded enough to allow discussion about topics they feel strongly about? I mean you got a lefty teacher who brags about her pink hats and has rainbow flags all over her room… and who is KNOWN for targeting conservative students, do you think such a kid will feel free to speak up?
That would be great! It hasn’t happened yet, despite the fact that white urban rednecks don’t feel all that oppressed right now (and never did).
Are. You. Serious.
That’s like saying “Well, I stopped punching him in the face, so why isn’t he thanking me for not punching him in the face? Now if you’ll excuse me I need to get back to punching him in the nuts.”
Those aren’t in conflict at all, any more than being on the football team, or AV club, or Spanish club, or a bible study group, or any other school organization.
“This is leftist crap” isn’t the response of a CHILD who is there to learn reason and knowledge. Or that of an adult on a message board.
And switch it around. Do you think liberal minded students are free to speak up in classrooms where the teacher throws her conservative christianity in their faces and constantly tells them they’re evil?
Imagine getting some rightist crap and telling the teacher you thought it was so?
Do you REALLY think all public school teachers can be open minded enough to allow discussion about topics they feel strongly about? I mean you got a rightwing teacher who brags about her MAGA hats and has Christian flags all over her room… and who is KNOWN for targeting liberal students, so you think such a kid will feel free to speak up?
But I will say, in my workplace you can get your ass fired by being racist or sexist. Because we’re a computer company - we don’t have to put up with politically incorrect bullshit.
My buddy is currently doing hiring for a computer company (specifically one that does automated testing). He’s willing to hire you if you’re completely untrained - he can work with that. If he gets the idea that you’re an asshole, though, forget it.
That’s the thing about these sorts of jobs - you have to work with other people. And enough of those other people nowadays aren’t assholes that it’s no longer ‘cool’ to be casually racist or sexist around the water cooler anymore. Times be a-chanin’ - and they’ll have changed even more by the time kids nowadays enter the workforce.
Depends on the nature of the job. A “social justice” club speaks volumes about someone’s willingness to work with people of diverse backgrounds and desire for open communication between all groups. For many jobs this is more important than technical skills.
So the only reason kids should take any class in school is so they can get a particular job? Just toss out English, geography, history, art? Jesus fucking Christ.
The purpose of ‘school’ and a basic education is to fill you with the basic cultural, linguistic, math, science and other information that you need to live a useful life in society.
The most awesome part of basic education is being exposed to everything. Ideas, tools, philosophies, activities, everything. So that you can find out what you like and what you want to do in life. And that only gets better the more you are exposed to, even when, or sometimes especially when that makes you uncomfortable and challenges what you’ve learned in your home.
Of course, that makes it really easy to see why some people want to home school their children or limit their access to ideas, because doing so lets them control and mold their children’s lives into being a miniature model of their own lives, their own ideas, their own hates and shortcomings.
So what if Little Stevie is whip smart and would make a great attorney or a great scientist if only he was exposed to those ideas. Better to stop him from being made aware of his potential greatness if that means he’d question his parent’s ideology, right?
Listen, hipster, not everyone can afford your artisanal free range organic locally sourced social justice, okay? Give the working class a goddamned break!
