Wounds and Tatoos

Hi. I was wondering what happens to a tatoo after a cut or a burn. Does the wound bleed ink along with blood? Does the scar have ink? And if it does, is the design affected or does the scar retain the original details under it? What about burns?

I was compelled the other day to ask a guy walking down the street literally covered with tatoos (him, not the street) since he would definately know but he didn’t look like the chatty type so I decided to ask you guys.

I don’t think the guy would definately know just because he has tattoos, I have several (albeit far from covered) and I can only give you the answer I assume is correct. That is, I’m sure the tattoo would come back distorted or gone altogether depending on the severity/deepness of the wound. I also don’t think ink would bleed out, even if it would, I don’t think there would be enough to notice. Your best bet would be to call up a tattoo parlor and ask them, I’m sure they had to do touch-ups for people that have had injuries/surgeries over tattoos.

I have a tattoo that caught a 3rd degree burn on a kiln. Most of the tattoo is now gone short of a few ink spots here and there. Mostly it’s just a 3rd degree burn scar.

I was younger when it happened and I didn’t take care of the burn as well as I should have. About a week after being burned it got infected. Under the entire scab I was pus’ed and gross. When I gave it a good cleaning the scab came off in almost one piece and had the ink in it. I pretty much just lifted the tattoo off my body.

Mind you this was a nasty burn. Think along the lines of a bad cattle brand.

When you get sut the ink doesn’t bleed out. Think of the inked skin as regular skin but a different colour. A cut will look different on inked skin because the blood looks darker with black/blue skin behind it. A mild cut will have very little impact on a tattoo.

I have one tattoo that ended up with an ingrown hair in the middle of it. The skin ended up a slightly damaged so there is a little area in the tattoo that looks a little more aged then the rest. I doubt anyone but me would notice it.

My google-fu isn’t up to par, but I once came upon a website with before and after pictures of tattoos which had been botched after surgery.
