My wife is from rural China. She is adamant about not allowing any wound that bled to get wet until it is healed. When we were first married I once placated her by consenting to wear a rubber glove in the shower over my injured hand. My visiting mother-in-law has the same idea about water and infections.
I suppose this is an understandable practice in China where water is generally not fit to drink unless boiled first. But then, wouldn’t it be alright to wash with boiled water too?
This past Thursday our two-year-old son got a boo-boo on a finger and my wife would not consent to giving him a bath or washing his hands until Tuesday night.
I’ve tried to explain to her that the risk of infection is greatest during and immediately after the injury and that treatment with an anti-biotic ointment or peroxide at that time is a good idea, but after the wound has a good scab you don’t really need to worry about it unless its reopened. Washing at that point is definitely a good thing, isnt it?
I wish she could see those old “I am stuck on band-aid” commercials where the kids are proudly showing off their band-aids in the pool and tub.
(1) Am I right about this?
(2) Should we be at all concerned about getting a wound wet?
Any info about this would be appreciated, esp. if it is from a medical professional.
