“Can I work this, or will I look like some kind of gay superhero?” - Patrick Stewart, in Jeffrey (he’s a riot)
I would think “coming out” in the WNBA would mean revealing you like guys.
“Queer Eye for the Space Guy”
And yeah, I’ve known he had to be for years…but I am really glad he did this.
Well, cool.
I’ve assumed he was for years. It was never an issue one way or the other, but the fact that he’s good looking, successful and from a traditional Asian family but yet never married, while at the same time using the plural “We” on his blog and in articles to refer to vacations (“We went to England last week” or “We were out to dinner at a friend’s the other night”) without mentioning who the other half of we was just all basically chime the bells. I figured it was 100% his-call whether he came out, but I do majorly appreciate the fact he never publicly denied it or did a photo op with a starlet at a premiere or anything like that. He’s just a private person.
I regret that he has problems with his family over the issue. If he does write a book I hope he addresses that because it’s one of the most important issues in an individual coming to grips with their “gayularity” and the decision to come out. I also hope this doesn’t typecast him as just another gay Japanese Sci-Fi TV icon guy.
Oh, and I totally agree with the above on the degree of Homoseku Sulu’s hotness in his prime. I was surprised when I learned that they brought on Chekhov for young hottie sex appeal (specifically because he was a general Davy Jones type) when they had Sulu right there.
Damn you. I was about to post about the same thing.
I wonder if Howard Stern was talking about it this morning. He calls the show sometimes and they play soundbites of his a lot. I’ve been in meetings all morning, so I haven’t listened.
Well, good for him, but I agree that it’s sad he felt he had to hide his relationship and his sexual orientation. That can’t be an easy thing to deal with (the public scrutiny, that is. Not being gay).
Did anyone else read this word and think “singularity”? I immediately imagined a gigantic space object discovered by the Enterprise. “We’re approaching the edge of the Gayularity, captain. My god, What’s happening to Sulu?!”
I think that was the same episode where Scotty first said “I’m givin’ 'er everything I’ve got, Cap’n, but it just isn’t enough…” for the first time, and the voice of Majel Barrett as ship’s computer was replaced with that of Judy Garland.
Later, we find out that’s where Q is from.
Cite?
I was a die hard Trekkie for many years and this was the first that I’d heard of it. I guess I need to turn in my fake Spock ears and plastic phaser.
Marc
It’s not much, but e said at a convention that he did not want a gay or lesbian character on Star Trek. There may be more.
"Gays—the final frontier … "
I’d like to see the next Star Trek Franchise to star Takei as an openly gay Star Trek admiral.
Excelsior. Tuvok was on his crew, BTW.
Soon to star in his own spinoff, Q as Folk.
“Set phasers on fabulous, Mr. Sulu.”
That “coming out” dialogue was elegantly phrased of him, he’s always been an excellent speaker/narrator (has done a few documentaries and such).
But… but… but… does that mean that there was a GAY PERSON who did a GUEST VOICE on THE SIMPSONS???
[faints]
He once wrote on the back of a flat at the Orange County Performing Arts Center: “I’M TRANSPORTED!”
Shoulda figured something was up when I saw that.
