Wow, I agree with Limbaugh on something (99% vs. 1%)

My point is its not nepotism. Her job is to get people to watch the show. Therefore she WILL do a better job than an anonymous journalism graduate no one has heard of.

I DO get worked up over how shitty news coverage has become nowadays, and I think its worth complaining about. But screaming nepotism simply wrong.

The OP didn’t even mention the main problem with this story, that NBC are adding ANOTHER soft news segment to their nightly news show. I don’t give a crap who hosts it they could get Osama Bin Laden’s daughter to host for all I care. I’d rather stab my own eyes out than watch a “news” story about a “7-year-old boy raising money for a friend with cancer by racing go-karts”.

I’m sure millions of new viewers will tune in to watch Chelsea Clinton read from a prompter on TV.

She’s not the fucking anchorman, she’s reporting for the “Make a Difference” segment of puff piece crapola. Oh No, she may not have the journalistic chops to cover Li’l Brudder.

If you think there won’t be a ratings bump on the first show she’s in you are sadly over estimating popular culture (especially with people like Rush Limbaugh making sure she gets plenty of additional publicity).

If you are a producer of the NBC Nightly news show you could either spend your budget on doing actual journalism, you know finding stories, investigating them, and reporting on the results. But that shit is expensive and no cares anyway. You could also just fork out a little dough for someone famous to do stories about kids riding go karts for their sick friend. As a business decision nowadays that is I’m afraid a no brainer :frowning:

Aside:

Gotta wonder about the values of the hyper-ambitious. People like Horndog Bill, who was running for President before he could jack off. Do they not see that if they achieve their goals, and have kids at the same time, they have made any sort of normal life for those children impossible? What, can Chelsea get a job at the local day-care? Might the kids wonder who those very serious men in suits with sunglasses and earbuds are doing every time Ms Chelsea comes to work?

What kind of man would prefer to be a good father than a President? Well, the kind of man I admire, kind of man I would want to be President. Kind of man who won’t run. Damn.

End aside/

Why hire her then?

Bill Clinton I could see hiring. He might have some real insight. But his daughter? Why?

In one of the Douglas Adams books he talks about how you would choose someone to be supreme ruler of the entire universe. He says something like: One of the first questions you’d ask is ‘do you want to be supreme ruler of the entire universe?’ and if they answer yes they are clearly unsuitable to be supreme ruler of the entire universe.

“Fuck no!”

“Well, if you don’t take it , we give it to Rick Perry…”

“Hold it, let me call my daughter. Honey? It’s Daddy. Well, I’m just about to totally fuck up your life. But I have to. I’ll explain later…”

I suspect that the producers feel that her name recognition would help them generate better ratings than an anonymous talking head. She may have better access to certain types of stories than an anonymous talking head. She may have better luck getting honest and open interviews than an anonymous talking head.

Real insight into what? The motivations of a mother trying to raise money to pay for her child’s mechanical appendix?

I don’t know that nepotism has ever been part of what the Occupy Wall Street movement was railing against. For one thing, people have been greasing the skids for their children for hundreds of years, and yet, in the U.S. at least, we mostly had a growing, prospering economy that raised the living standard of all the people in it. Some did better than others, but almost everyone did better than the generation before. That’s what has changed recently, and the policies behind that seem to be more at the heart of what the Occupiers are about.

As for hypocrisy, I think it’s interesting to contrast the Occupiers with the Tea Partiers. Occupy Wall Street is taking place while the Democrats hold the presidency and one house of Congress. They are being critical of the government while their party (at least as Rush Limbaugh would have us believe) is setting policy. Compare that to the Tea Party who claim to be against government deficits but were silent on the issue while those deficits were happening under Republicans.

obbn, sweetie, you didn’t get a rolleyes because of your point. You got a rolleyes because it’s the Democratic Party. If you’re going to call us names and insult us, get it right.
