Wow I'm surprised. Munchhausen.

Unable to sleep I just saw this movie. It was not at all what I expected. I had always known that there had been a version on the story made long before Gilliam. But I didn’t expect it to be that well done, for a movie done by Nazi propagandists.

All the great costumes and epic scale of a DeMille picture, Disney like adventure farce, a bit of Twilight zone, plus a good bit of Benny Hill level good times, all based on a complex hero who was largely an amoral hedonist. I only wish I understood German better to understand all the context, because even what I know I could tell the subtitles didn’t do the dialogue justice(was the guy always talking about getting Braunschwieger a gay joke, or something else more subtle?)

Ooh, this sounds neat! I’m going to go try to find it. Who directed, do you recall?

Obviously not Terry Gilliam. There was an older Munchausen movie?

I saw this one, I think–I remember a nude bathing scene in the sultan’s harem. Kind of a fun movie.

There’s no link. Are you talking about the film directed by Josef von Baky?
If you are, it really wasn’t Nazi propaganda. Just a well-done fantasy film.

Yes it is the Baky film

Nuts. I saw this on the program guide last night and thought it might be interesting, but my TiVo’s sort of on the full side these days so I didn’t record it. Sounds like I erred. With luck they’ll rebroadcast.

Yeah, fascinating. I had to wait for my boss to go out of town to order it for the store, but now of course he claims credit for adding it to the “collection.”
