Wow, What An Intensely Bad Idea for a Child's Item

Behold the Pet Pocket Harness.

From the description:
" Children love carrying their small pets, stuffed animals and dolls in this kid-size pet pocket. The yellow mesh front pack has …a safety hook that latches to a live animal’s collar or harness. A firm yet cushioned bottom gives good support to a bunny, kitten or puppy, and easily wipes clean in case of accidents. The hands-free pack also features a treat pocket, and drawstring closure to keep hamsters and gerbils inside."

Ok, so, the kid carries a stressed out animal strapped to their chest, where it merrily shits, pisses, barks, and is generally terrorized. I’m sure this is a fabulous product, perfect for the mall or church. Obviously it promotes nothing but respect and compassion for animals, plus the healthy love of piss running down our t-shirts that we all want to instill in our children.

It depends on the kind of pet being carried too. A gerbil, rabbit, or hamster would chew through the mesh and escape in no time flat. Which would lead to a possibly injurious fall. :frowning:

I could see using it for a doll, or a stuffed animal. But a real life pet? You’re just ASKING for scratches!

I used to have a cat that thought it was the greatest treat to ride around perched on my shoulder. But generally speaking, any creature that really needs to move around outside a cage can probably do so under its own power. Walking around with a gerbil (which can’t see more than a few feet away anyway) in a pouch on your chest is like asking to be attacked by a dog or cat.

Still, I don’t think it beats the 38” AIR KICKS KICKAROOS ANTI-GRAVITY BOOTS. Why not just strap a cluster of Estes motors to your kid’s legs and light them off simultaneously?

Stranger

I had a cat that would do that too. sigh I miss her.

(But if I had tried to carry her around in that pouch-hooboy! I’d be lucky to have any skin left on my face!)

Actually, if you think about it, it may not be all bad.

I remember seeing an adult sized version of this once. It wasn’t completely mesh. The pouch strapped on like a backwards backpack and the owner was using it to carry a small dog through a fairly large crowd. She went past me several times during the day, sometimes “wearing” the dog and sometimes with it on a leash. I presume the dog got a ride whenever it showed signs of being tired or the crowd got too thick.

I wouldn’t want to try a hamster in a setup like that, but a calm cat or small dog might actually like the ride and enjoy being closer to it’s owner than a leash would allow. It might be helpful in socializing timid small dogs. When the dog felt threatened, it would have a safe place to retreat to.

On the whole, not a bad idea in itself, but only with specific animals and probably not a good idea for kids.

I have a device similar to that - it’s made for dogs but my cat Cricket likes to ride in it. I don’t think I would feel safe letting a child cart a live animal around, though. I guess it depends on the pet and the maturity level of the child.

I’m afraid my cat would need to be anaesthestised before he’d ride in that thing. He doesn’t play that sh*t.

that would have been very handy when i was bottle-feeding a kitten. i had to take her everywhere for 2-3 weeks.

I can’t get the page to load. What age group is thing intended for?

For an adult, this could be a very handy tool (and is, according to zoogirl’s observations). But for a little kid? Carrying little fragile animals? From what I’ve seen, most little kids are 1) easily distracted, and 2) uncoordinated. Carrying a small animal like a gerbil for the length of time that a special carrier might actually be useful opens up a large possibility that the pet is either going to be forgotten or squished.

For an older, more responsible kid, it could be ok, but I’m still not seeing how useful it would be.

Oh, WOW! I totally want these!

Just a note- I did have a hamster who enjoyed pocket-riding.
