WPS files. What are they?

A friend of mine just sent me part of our presentation in thefile format .wps. My Word 2000(part of Office 2000 Professional) will not open this file. Two questions really.

  1. What did she use to make this file?

  2. Is there a way to read it through Word? Note: It said it needed to install a component, but when it did, it still opened it in just symbols, etc.

This is a Microsoft Works document.

To identify a file extension, go here.

.wps is usually a Microsoft Works file. Word has never been good at converting them (which is odd, since Microsoft makes them both). Word 2000 seems to be able to read Works 4.0 files, but I don’t know beyond that.

You may need to install a text converter element. If you can’t, your friend will have to save the file in a format Word can read.

My Word2000 shows [file/open] the Works for Windows files are .wps

Did you install the file conversion component Word was asking about?

If it still did not work, then Word tried to open it as a Works file when it was not a Works file.

Have you asked the friend who sent you the file?

Word does not seem good at converting some file types.

Do a search for WordPort. It is a shareware [I think] file conversion program. I only used it twice but it worked good.

If you’re going to be exchanging documents with her on a regular basis, ask her to save her documents as Rich Text Format (RTF). Word 2000 can read and save as RTF, and I am pretty sure that the Works word processor can read RTF too. I know it can save as RTF because I’ve used it for docs I’m sending to Word users.

This link from the MS site tells you how to install the converter pack if it’s not already installed:
