Writing to a CD ...

What is the difference between CD-R and CD-RW?

My PC’s CD drive can (and has in the past) burn CDs. But now it can’t.

Did I get a batch of CDs (They are CD-R) that is incompatible with my device? Or is my device hosed?

cd-rs are recordable only once whereas with cdrws, you can record and erase for up to 1000 times. CDRs are cheaps as hell, CDRWs are more expensive.

All cd burners manufactured within the past 5 years are guaranteed to burn both formats.

Can you more specific about your problem? what burning software are you using? Have you tried other alternatives? can you read cdrws ? Do you get an error while burning or is it something else? You should at least try nero burning rom and alcohol 120%. Both have trial versions you can use for 30 days. Try to burn something and let us know exactly what happens

Maybe windows is not recognizing your burner as such and instead thinks it’s a generic CDrom reader. Go to your control panel then into your device manager and take a look at your cdrom drive’s name. Report back when you do.

Inigo, do you have a copy of Nero InfoTool, which should be included as part of most Nero installs?

See if you can get hold of it if you don’t have it, then run it. It will then tell you all about the drives you have on your pc, in regards to what media it will and won’t play, and what speeds etc they will burn at.

The question about CD-R and CD-RW was specific and answered, but the questions about the burning problem didn’t give us much to go on. The devil is in the details and so if someone wants help getting rid of a devil, they need to provide details. If you called a mechanic and told him simply that your car wasn’t runnning, would he be able to tell you how to fix it without any more information? So when someone has a problem with burning CDs, it isn’t unreasonable to ask for the details. What burning software are you using? Is it generating error messages and if so, what are they? Have you checked the drive itself in Device Manager? Is there anything you can tell us that might help us narrow it down between a software problem and a hardware problem? In other words, provide as many details as you can think of because when it comes to troubleshooting problems via a forum, there is no such thing as too much information.

You think it’s confusing now? Just wait until the day you move up to DVD’s. I swear it’s enough to make my head spin.
