WSDOT can't tell the difference between motorcycles and cars

Nope at 55.9 cents/gal it’s less than HI (63.4) CA (63.8) CT (65.8) NY (68.7), PA (68.9)

Sounds to me like the idea is that, if you have a motorcycle transponder, they don’t bother to run your plate or do any analysis.

This sort of optimization happens in computing all the time. You know the database running this messageboard? It has your names listed all throughout, linked directly to the post. You may think, why not just have a single database of names, and link them? Because it’s more efficient to have the names still attached to the posts.

The same thing is happening here. Why not go and look up the license plate? Because it’s more efficient to know right away without the costly OCR (optical character recognition) and database lookup.

It does create an obvious point of failure, though–if someone can figure out how to put a motorcycle transponder on a car, the system probably wouldn’t be able to tell. They must be counting on this number being low enough that it can be caught in manual review.

Okay, one of the highest gas taxes in the country.

A number of years ago some jackass Republican citizen started an initiative, which made it to a (successful) public vote to reduce vehicle license fees to $30 a year, regardless of the vehicle or the age of the vehicle. I guess he thought he was having to pay to much to license his Escalade. The initiative, once it passed, crippled public transit in the state. My own city’s free bus service had to start charging fares. The legislature compensated for the lost revenue by coming up with multiple “fees” to be charged when renewing vehicle licenses. Everybody is still paying pretty much what they would have been before the initiative, but public transit is still crippled because it doesn’t get any share of those fees. Public transit’s share still only comes from the $30 license fee, not from the other fees.

Since then I have voted against every single initiative that jackass has introduced, just on principle.

No, I am neither Democrat nor Republican. I was raised as a Republican, but as a low-income adult, I see rich Republicans trying to cut their own taxes, and then the Democrats try to make up the difference by sucking it out of the rest of us. They’re two sides of the same coin. Fuck them all.

Because, duh, everyone calls it Washington State. Can you guess why? A curious factoid, although I have this only on hearsay. The first proposed name for the state was Columbia, but that was rejected because it could be too easily confused with the District of Columbia.

Psst - post 12. :stuck_out_tongue:

Not from there so I’m missing a lot of information.

Cost to driver for the transponder? They were free and encouraged in my past area. I had ones from both Oklahoma and Texas.

I got them to save time and money. Without transponders, do you have to stop and manually pay the tolls? That’s a real hassle on a motorcycle just like digging out your ID to get on a military base. We also got 5% off on our monthly bill.

Don’t blame Demos. Texas and Oklahoma are firmly red state and have no problem jacking up fees. Just don’t use the word “taxes”.

In GA, no transponder means you can’t use the lane, period. Even a vehicle that is obviously exempt can’t use the lane if there is no transponder on board. Calling it a transponder in GA, btw, seems a little much. It’s actually a 1 inch by 3 inch decal with an RF chip and tiny antenna inside the decal.
