After the attacks on September 11, were tolls still collected at the various bridges and tunnels in NYC? (Some of the bridges were used by masses of pedestrians to walk out of Manhattan, so they don’t count)
It’s been my experience that NYC collects tolls under the worst of circumstances, no matter how backed up things get. Hope I’m wrong about this one.
No tolls are ever collected leaving Manhattan. They only collect tolls for people heading in to the city. I doubt they would have collected tolls for emergency vehicles, and they were the only ones going in.
Good point. But I do know a number of people who did go into Manhattan (or at least tried to) because they feared for friends and relatives. So the question still stands.
How did they get in? All the news sources I remember seeing on the 11th stated repeatedly that all bridges and tunnels into Manhattan were closed to non-emergency vehicles.
The Midtown tunnel charges both ways, as does the Triboro Bridge. Not sure about the Battery Tunnel, I don’t believe I’ve ever gone through it. These passages are run by the MTA.
Brooklyn the Staten Island: The toll on the Narrows bridge is $7.00 outbound-Brooklyn to Staten, and free the other way.
From Long Island (Queens): The Throgs Neck and Whitestone Bridges charge both ways (Queens/Bronx).
Can’t say what the situation was on the 11th, though I wouldn’t doubt they’d be waving people through if the traffic was enough.
Thanks postcards, after I’d posted I realized that I really didn’t know about all the possible routes. But in general, even on normal days, they don’t want people backed up in Manhattan waiting to pay tolls, right?
BTW, what are all the bridges/tunnels to Manhattan?
