WTF?? Two guys jump David Souter at 9PM, robbery not the motive. Then what was?

All together, now.
FOIL BEANIES ON

If we accept the facts as stated

http://www.cnn.com/2004/LAW/05/01/souter.assaulted/

do we think it unrelated to his day job?

If related, is it because of his famous status on the right as the justice they don’
t want duplicated ("no more Souters…)

I’m guessing we have no way of knowing at this point who the two men were or what was involved, and hence little means to debate the issue.

Why assume it was related? JUst because he is on the SCOTUS? Do you think two violent knuckledraggers would have recognized Souter by sight, let alone know what his position is?
I mean, really, would this be the first time someone was picked at random to be the victim of violence? It can happen to famous people too. And until that link you posted, I had no idea what Souter looked like.

I am more than a bit suprised that a USSC Justice goes tearing around without SS following him.

So am I. Helps me with my planning, though.

/me slumps to the floor as 2 FBI agents leap through his window and open fire

<threadjack>BTW, mmmm… Rommel… everyone’s favorite Nazi!</threadjack>

A) Everyone needs a daily dose of Rommel. Especially when you are going to play some Combat Mission: Afrika Korp!

B) I thought that the SS guarded Senators and other riff-raff, as well as the President, but a visit to http://www.secretservice.gov shows otherwise.

A) Ooh, they released the new ones? I haven’t paid attention to Combat Mission for a while. Drool. Rommel and CM in one package… wow.

B) Yea, they are actually pretty limited in what they do. Most have some kind of private security guard, though… especially jogging through DC at night.

It worries me that SCOTUS Justices don’t have a 24/7 security detail. It’s bad enough that a Justice might retire before November, now I have to worry that one might get wasted while jogging. <<shudder>>

Be careful, my friend! Back in college, the Secret Service came on campus one day because a student had gotten a letter from a friend on which he had written on the envelope as a joke, “The plot to kill the President is still on.” Apparently, like airport screeners, these guys don’t have too much of a sense of humor.

[I always wondered…Do all envelopes get scanned for this sort of thing or did the postman just happen to notice it?]

Did they ask him what the frequency was, Kenneth? If so, it all makes sense…

more sense than the story as it is currently framed.

Do two guys randomly jump a jogger, steal nothing, cause (by report) no serious damage, and then take off?

I guess I’m responding to an unwillingness to believe that this is a “random” attack because in my experience those at least have (usually) a social, gender, or racial origin.

Maybe he put up too much of a fight or made too much noise, so they decided it wasn’t worth the trouble. The speculation about this incident has now spawned THREE threads, each one sillier than the last.

Supreme Court justices are guarded by plainclothes officers of the U.S. Marhsal’s Service.

I sort of like the idea that at least some members of government live normal, unguarded lives. Once I saw The Second Lady at a department store. She had two guards but she was living a normal life, sort of.

Like I said, I rather like the idea.

Perhaps the reason they stole nothing was because he had nothing?

The joggers I know rarely carry anything more than a key to their house when jogging. If he didn’t have a cell phone, wallet or watch, there was nothing to take.

Just one option…

But apparently not very well.

Read this http://www.guardian.co.uk/worldlatest/story/0,1280,-4057888,00.html and you will probably understand why he was jogging alone and there’s probably nothing more to the story, as others have said.
