That’s the thing though, I don’t necessarily buy her being a toxic relative. He has a right to do and engage with whomever he wants, but that doesn’t mean his interpretations and perceptions are correct. Go listen to the Champs podcast he was on. He talks about getting into dust-ups with other people who were being “unfair” to him. Even the idea that he’d pick an anecdote about his parents yelling at him because he was failing all his classes as an example of them being overbearing is kinda ridiculous
Not even mentioning the fact that his whole beef with Stewart was after he expressed his disapproval three times, and was basically told they disagreed with him. If you tell your boss you think what he’s doing is wrong on three separate occasions, then basically intimate he is a racist, him cursing you out is FAR more understandable. That’s not to say I can’t see Stewart being a jerk on occasion, but rather that Cenac seems to be a guy, like Maron ironically, that handles situations like that really poorly. Even the idea that Stewart erred in his eyes by not being a more paternal figure or close friend to him is strange. Cenac just strikes me as the type of guy who yells at his parents telling them he didn’t ask to be born.
Sorry - misunderstood. Yes, I recall his story about how he ended up on The Daily Show. He’s funny, too, fortunately!
Your other point is valid. As an old, straight white guy, it has been fascinating to see the beginnings of this hearing other voices. Good to see. Change is hard for macho-type cultures like the U.S.'s. This will be interesting.
