Our family is watching “the X-Files” serially, second time around for Dad and I, first time for Kid Unit, who was born in the early 90s.
What we’d like to know is the story behind the dog who played Scully’s pomeranian, Queequeg, for a few episodes of the show.
Although we’re fanatics of the show and have done some Internet searches on the topic, we can only find material about the character Queequeg, not the dog who played him. Anybody have any leads?
(Oh, and the X-Files is still rippingly good!! Unbelievable, esp. the first 2 seasons.)
Queequeg is from Clyde Bruckman’s Final Repose. Bruckman is an insurance salesman who can predict when and how a person will die. He takes in his neighbour’s dog (which had apparently been forced to feed on the woman) and leaves him to Scully when he himself dies.
And in the novel “Moby-Dick,” Queegqueg is a Polynesian harpooner who’s busy building a coffin for himself, since he’s already had a vision of his own death. So, that literary allusion fits with Bruckman’s powers.
I have nothing to share other than the fact that in my X-Files watching group back in college I was the only one to be sad for the poor doggy when it got eaten by the lake monster. Bunch of heartless bastards!
Yep I’m definitely asking about the canine actor (our kid always asks the deeper questions) but came up with nothin on the internet save some fan “Queequeg memorial” sites which are pretty funny but don’t address the identity of said dog. We really love Queequeg’s little story arc, it was a damn shame he became alligator snax. We sympathize, fiddlesticks!
No idea about the dog’s real identity, but if you want to placate Kid Unit with a bit of trivia…
In an interview, Gillian Anderson told a tale about the the scene in which Scully is bathing the dog in her kitchen sink. Apparently the dog, in real life, had a wicked case of gas, and Anderson had to hold her breath between takes because its noxious butt was so bad.
