Xbox 360 - F1 2010 - Braking Assists

Does anyone know what the Braking Assist driving aid does in this game? With it on, I seem to fight the car through corners. With it off, my brakes don’t seem to work very well at all - even if I start braking before the suggested driving line turns red. When it’s on, I can just put my foot down on the gas and steer, but my lap time is crap. If I try to brake with it on, I can’t seem to improve my lap time over just putting my foot down on the gas.

How is it “assisting” me? I think it’s just automatic brakes.

If it’s at all important, I’m driving using the Xbox 360 racing wheel. Is it maybe a controller-input issue?

I’m assuming it’s the same as in the PC version.

Essentially breaking “assist” does all the breaking for you. You just hold down the gas and steer.

I can easily run a better time with it off and doing my own breaking than with it on, YMMV.

Yeah, it brakes for you. You never have to lift off of the gas. A friend told me to play the game and I was doing terrible. I went through the options and found this on, so I turned it off. My lap times greatly improved. He ended up not liking the game so he sold it to me for $20.

I’d never tried it and just had a go. As noted above it brakes for you. Like all of the assists it may have a small benefit for someone who hasn’t got the hang of the game but you can be quicker without them. The braking assist seems to be the most severe, it brakes too early and doesn’t let you accelerate out of the corner the way you can with it off. The traction control will help prevent you spinning your wheels and/or spinning out but with it turned off you are able to more closely accelerate at the limit of traction and get better performance. I haven’t tried the ABS but typically they let you hold the brakes on as you’re turning into the corner rather than having to release them. ABS is probably the one that is most difficult to do better than without the assist.

I just had a run around Budapest with the barking assist on and off. I’m 6 seconds faster with it off (partly because I’m not used to using it but having confidence that the car will do what you tell it to do is half the battle, braking assist takes that away.)

If I was you I’d turn the brake assist off, leave the traction control on half at least, and turn the racing line off. To get fast around a track you need to learn where to brake and turn in and which part of each corner to make the apex, the racing line hinders this learning process because you get used to taking your cues from the artificial line instead of learning the braking markers from the actual physical features on the track. Also you might find that you can come up with a faster line than it does. You have the rubbered part of the track to get an idea of where the ideal line is anyway.

Thanks for confirming my suspicion. It’s sort of a sledgehammer of an “aid,” isn’t it?
